Feast at Lele & Other Restaurants in Maui
 

My husband and I and another couple are considering going to Feast of Lele; however have seen suggestions to go to Hecock's for dinner and view show at Lele. If you go to Hecock's is the experience just as good?

Also, we have 4 other nights to go out for dinner and need help. We are staying in South Maui on the border of Wailea and Keihi.

We are considering Mama's Fish House, but it is soooo expensive. Is Mama's the best restaurant in Maui? Is it really worth the $$$?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

The Feast is wonderful. I know it's a bit pricey but you get to try food from various South Pacific regions, have a great performance show, and best yet - a killer sunset!

Mama's is a must. I also reccomend Roys, Plantation House, and Banyan Tree. My thoughts on the dinner prices in Maui is just assume things will be pricey and don't look at the numbers on the menu. Trust me, you'll enjoy the food soooo much more. Plus, every night does not have to be a big night out.

cak01 - There's absolutely no way that the experience at Hecock's could be anywhere near as good, because you won't be dining on the incredible food you get at Feast at Lele or the open bar on the fabulous drinks. For everything you're getting (5 course meal, drinks, show), I don't think it's a great value. Mama's is also a must. If price is a concern, do a lunch, which I think is equally nice as dinner because of the view of the ocean, so it's a little cheaper. That's what we did and it was great. Sorry...typo there - I meant to say that for everything you get, Feast at Lele is a great value.

Everyone says the food at Lele is wonderful, I'm not sure why you'd want to go to dinner elsewhere.

We just got back from Hawaii and I thought our best meal was at Mama's Fish House but it was also our most expensive meal. We also went to Nick's Fishmarket and thought it was very good. We went to Roy's on the Big Island and I was unimpressed. They have one here in Chicago and I have been wanting to go but hadn't yet. I thought the food was pretty good at Roy's (not great) but it had no atmosphere whatsoever. I am not sure if every location is the same.

We just returned from Maui - went to Mama's Fish House - GO!!! It's expensive but the food and the whole experience was out of this world. My cousin & hubby were with us and he didn't want to go because of the money but went out of there feeling like he had the best meal (mahi mahi and creme brulee are a must). I would suggest a 5:30 to 6 time so you can see a bit of the place during the daytime. Hecock's - we did that as well and had a nice meal overlooking the luau - there were 6 of us & we had a bit of a problem over the bill - 17 or 18% gratuity tacked on automatically which we didn't realize as it doesn't happen in Canada so we gave him another 22% tip and he didn't even say anything! We thought about it after and went back because we thought there had been a mistake made because bill was too high - turns out the guy was just being dishonest! Anyway, meal was okay and seeing the luau was wonderful so it depends - if you want just a plain fairly expensive meal (nothing to write home about but ok) and want a glimpse of a luau then go to Hecock's. If you want the different food and want to be right into the luau, then go to the luau. I'm saying that because there were 6 of us, half of us visited and the other half were looking over the bannister watching the luau. Beautiful backdrop either way!!

I've sat in Hecock's many times and had cocktails and pupus or for their daily dinner specials and watched parts of the FLL show. If you are on a tight budget and don't have $100 per person to spend, but still want to be able to see the entertainment, then Hecocks is is an option. But it is not the same as dining on the lawn and spending the evening at FLL. It's kind of like watching a ball game from the company sky box--it's out there and you'll see some of it, but there are other things going on around you, and you are not really down in the midst of things, if that analogy makes sense. I have never sat at Hecock's for the entire show. FLL is a big production and the meal and show takes a bit longer than I'd feel comfortable tieing up a table after we've finished with our Wed night $14.95 crab special.

Are the waiters at Hecock's buff, topless, Hawiian guys? If not... go to Lele. (The food and show are great too!)

Oh dear, is Hecock's at the back corner of a group of shops and restaurants on lower end of Front street, wood shingled, with a kind of stuck in the 70's atmosphere, sharing the back yard fence with Lahaina Shores Hotel?
