favorite waterfront town/city

My husband and I want to getaway for a long weekend this summer in June or July. My husband loves waterfront shopping/dining. When we went to Maui, his favorite place was Lahaina. Anyone have a favorite similar spot? By waterfront, it doesn't necessarily have to be the ocean, could be lake or river also. Thanks in advance!

You might try looking up some waterfront places in Coastal Living Magazine online. The site has alot of info but you need to be a bit of a sleuth.

BTW, this is one of my favorite magazines t take on travel..relaxed reading and planning for my next trip!

From Newport Beach down to San Diego you could visit a different Beach community each night and have all the quality and diversity of Lahaina.

La Jolla is gorgeous with its stunning coastline and fab restaurants and shopping..
You can stay at the Grande Colonial Hotel and eat at Georges at the Cove or the Marine Room..
It's about 15 minutes north of San Diego..
I would go in July and the ocean water is clean and clear to snorkel, swim and kayak..
Have fun!

These ideas sound nice! I've been considering California. Any other ideas?

A few places come to mind, Boston, and north of Boston, Marblehead to Rockport.

If the carribean is also going to be considered, Harbour Island, lovely small island in the Bahamas, a bit of shopping, AMAZING beach, lovely hotels, great food and the warmest of people you will ever meet.

La Jolla is incredible.
Also, another idea might be Santa Barbara. We were just there yesterday and it was gorgeous!

How about Santa Cruz? Provincetown?

My personal favorites (I consider) similar in atmosphere to Lahaina are Puerto Vallarta Mexico and Waikiki on Oahu. But I'm guessing you mean within the U.S.

How about somewhere on the great lakes? Some friends went to Port Huron Michigan a few years ago and had a great time. I have also seen some great pictures of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that looked pretty enticing.
