Okay, I'll "bite." My cairn terrier's favorite vacation spot is Emerald Isle on the North Carolina coast. He loves to sprawl on a bench overlooking the water, and just stare at the ocean for hours, and imagine catching all those sea birds that swoop by him! (He has to imagine it, because he's 15 now, can't run in that sand anymore! ) But he does love the ocean as much as we do, seems to soothe him.

We generally prefer to vacation without our dogs, since we will not put them on an airplane and having them with us severely limits the types of places we can go.

But, we have taken them to the Grand Haven/Muskegon, MI area and loved it! We've stayed at the Holiday Inn in Grand Haven and love to go to Grand Haven State Park, plus do wonderful dunes hiking in Muskegon and PJ Hoffmaster State Parks. The pups also love to swim in the Lake Michigan waves, as long as they aren't toooo big.

I'd like any vacation with my dogs that included hiking and swimming!

This is the second year that we have driven from our home in Florida to Coastal Maine. We brought our two cairn terriers with us on both of these trips. They love to travel and are very good little hikers.

There is a mouse in the woodshed here at the rental, and of course, being the "ratters" that they are, have been trying diligently to rid the shed of this ghastly rodent.

Tween Waters Inn on Captiva Island. They have cottages that allow pets and walking the beach a throwing things into the Gulf for your buddy to fetch is great. We would sit and watch the sunset together, dog, DH and me and wait for the "green" flash that strange light that occurs as the sun sinks out of sight.

My latest pup, a boston terrier, is not fond of the beach. I'll have to find another sort of trip for us. LMF

We had a wonderful yellow lab named Griswald for many years and took him with us each summer to Lake James in Angola, Indiana where my parents had a cottage. He LOVED that lake and swam constantly! When we'd paddle out in the rowboat, the silly pooch swam after us. Ah, sweet days. After he died, we spread his ashes there in that lake.

We took our German shepherd Max, and our Australian shepherd Gator - both now gone - to the mountains.

We all stayed in a cozy cabin, and we brought along our horses and went trail riding for hours every day.

I never saw any dogs happier than those two were that trip!

Taking our Golden Retreiver to Yosemite in October. We're staying just outside of the park in a nice vacation home that allows pets. Our friends will be joining us with their mixed breed.

Our Rosie loves the beach in San Francisco where we live. If you're ever vacationing here and need a dog fix - head on over to Fort Funston. It is dog heaven and an amazing off-leash area.

She loves the beach and water so much that every time I've been to Hawaii - I can't help but think of her running along those golden shores. She would love it! I hear Hawaii may be rolling back their dog quarantine but don't think I could ever force Rosie to travel outside of the main passenger cabin, so she'll no doubt never fly with us.

So many!
1. "Spaniel Camp" in a village in central Austria (www.seckau.at). 50 Europeans (and us, the token Americans) and 60 English cocker spaniels in basic and advanced obedience classes twice a day (in German: Platz! Fuss! Bleibe!), group hikes in the Alps, spaniel and owner dinners together at little restaurants and "stubes,", exchanging beer preferences with Germans and Austrians, laughing at the Austrian IT guru who carried 6 pictures of his English cocker in his wallet and only one of his wife (she was holding the dog!)
2. Wonderful spring and fall week-ends in the Oregon Cascades, staying in a cabin at Odell Lake Lodge. Hikes to Diamond Creek Falls, sitting on our cabin's porch and watching eagles fish for landlocked salmon (kokanee).
3. A month in Paris with our previous English cocker. After the trip, driving back from San Francisco to Portland, OR, in a rented Lincoln Town Car, stopping overnight on the side of a country road near Ashland, and watching the Hale-Bopp comet soar overhead.
4. This summer's vacation in the Loire Valley and rural central France. Taking our dog with us for a tour of the chateau of Montresor, owned by a dog-loving Polish count. Having her at our side while we sampled the wines of Sancerre.
5. Week-ends in Sequim and Port Townsend, staying with our in-laws or at the Harborside Hotel. Watching our cocker go psycho with pleasure in the small rivers and streams.

Any vacation with our dog is a favorite vacation!

What a great thread. Maybe I can get some ideas of places to visit with one or more of my four guys, three mutts and one German Shepard. Our favorite place is Atlantic Beach, not far from bonniebroad's Emerald Island. Our dogs love to chase, not catch, the sea gulls. One actually likes to swim and body surf! Like btilke says "My favorite vacation is any one my dogs can come, too."

Yipee, this is so much better than debating takeaway boxes and how to get an upgrade!

Mwessel, after I read your post, my eyes were watering. Sounds like Gris had a nice life.

We've been taking 11 year old Crazed Casey (German Shorthair Pointer/Black lab mix) to Carmel every Thanksgiving for the past few years. He loves the doggie socialization and the treats in the shops/galleries. I wish there were more places that doggie friendly. Last year, we took him to the beach and let him off the leash. Seeing him run down the big mountain of sand to the water edge where we were was one the happiest memories I've ever had. He was totally, utterly joyful, barking and jumping in the air.

Years ago, we took him to "the big city" with us on a trip to San Francisco. We quickly found out he's a "country mouse" kind of dog. He absolutely freaked out in the hotel elevator, his legs were spread apart so far his chest was touching the floor, and he was frozen, eyes completely fixed ahead of him, tail in pointer mode. Later, when we got to our room, he was immediately alarmed by the ceiling fan (this is the dog that was once quite intimidated by a large garden gnome) which resulted in him spending a sleepless night staring at the motionless fan in our room in case it decided to do a sneak attack on us in the night.

SF Importer, if we manage to make it up to SF again with Casey, where exactly is Fort Funston?

We take our 2 standard poodles along with our friends' lab and swiss mountain dog to a beach house on the outer banks of NC and to a cabin with 15 acres in the mountains of VA. In both places the 4 of them run around and are so very happy. This is the only time our friends' dogs see the ocean so they really love that trip! We look forward to these vacations almost as much as we do to 'our' vacations because it is so wonderful to see 'the boys' having so much fun!

OH, fun thread! We have three Vizslas, Sara, Molly and Prince Phillip. Recently, Sara traveled with us to the Oregon Coast for three weeks! She was great and so happy!

We had a horrible thing happen to us two days ago. My DH left some rat poison out and two of our dogs ate it. We called the vet and he said to give them hydrogen peroxide which we did. The ones that had blue vomit were the ones that ate the poison.

Two of them did, we rushed them to ER scared to death and they were observed over night with IV's. The next day we had to feed them chicken and rice six times a day. They pulled through, but that sure was scary.

$750 dollars later, another vet said they couldn't have eaten enough for it to be fatal. We were really scared there for awhile. But they are OK now! They are so much a part of all of our lives, I can't imagine what it would be like without them! ***kim***

I made a 1500 mile trip with my dog because my dog sitter backed out at the last minute. We had a great time and he kept it interesting. I also felt more safe with a big German Shepherd in the car. I loved sneaking him into motels along the way too!

Our dog Amber was a golden retriever - husky mix and she went on our camping road trip with us for 10 of her 13 years years. She's gone now, but she probably had been to more places than most humans have been. She been about to 18 National Parks, 5 National Monuments, 12 State Parks, 7 Canadian Parks and drove with us our family all the way to Alaska and back on the Alaska Highway. She was a GREAT traveling dog.

Aloha Kimamom!

My vizsla's name is Max. Picked him up on Christmas eve 9 years ago, and since we couldn't agree on a name, we agreed to name him after the Grinch's dog, which turned out to be Max, mentioned I think once in the film.

He loves the Yachstman in Kennebunkport, the inn on Block Island, the house on the Vineyard, Yellow Monkey in Ogunquit, and most recently and the greatest find, the Cottages at Boat Basin in Nantucket, wonderful little condos, that encourage pets. Loved all three ferries. Hanging in a boating town, having people pet him, walking by...priceless.

An oceanfront cottage in Hatteras, NC, which allows pets. Our two Portuguese Water Dogs love the beach and particularly enjoy chasing the sand crabs that come out after the sun goes down.

Topman, could you give me info on the place in Hatteras? Would love to take our doggie there.......

You've all made me teary-eyed more than once during this thread. Since I've lost two Cairns, and my Trissie is now 15, we aren't sure how many more trips we'll have with him, so we are planning a trip to the ocean for his birthday the first week in October. These loving creatures are really God's best work...... .
