We have taken our Golden Retriever on quite a few road trips. She doesn't care where we go as long as she gets to come along. We have taken her to the beach, camping, cabins in the mountains, and backpacking. Unfortunately she can't go on all backpacking trips...most are too strenuous for her. She absolutely loves going to the mountains and getting to play in the snow!

What an enjoyable thread. My boston terrier, Mojo, went pretty much anywhere we went. He went on long car trips to the beach, mountains, cities, you name it. He was a good traveler. I just adopted an 8 week old puppy and this thread gives me excellent ideas for the future!

Oh I love this thread. Our Lab Sydney has been to lots of cottages with us in Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, etc. She is the best dog for travelling, you almost forget she is in the car. She is a great help to me, keeping an eye on our 3 year old. She is nevermore than a foot away from him at all times. One of the owners of the cottages we went to, loved her so much, he started taking her on his rounds in the morning for company ! |
Travdog, yes it was rather frightening! Dogs are fine, they are receiving a little bit of extra pampering, tho! Nice baths, chicken and rice dinners and lots of cuddles and hugs!!! Not fun stuff, that's for darn sure!! ***kim***

I'm glad I came back to this thread!
Here's a map that will give you a better idea of where Fort Funston is in San Francisco: http://www.sfvisitor.org/maps/html/Citywide.html On the left side you'll see Ocean Beach - follow it down the page to Fort Funston - at the end of the Great Highway, past the Zoo. This is the one true area of San Francisco that is completely leash free. We've taken Rosie to Chrissy field, but now that they've redone that area, they are pretty strict about tickets and fining off-leash dogs and their care-givers (as owners are known in the City). Elsewhere in the city there's the large dog run in Golden Gate Park. It's right near the Buffalo Paddock. Rosie goes there every weekday with her "Ruff 'n' Ready" doggie playgroup. She lives for the socialization - and the mud! There's also Coronoa Heights Park (midmap). There's a pretty big dog run here - but most of the dogs play off-leash on the big grassy field. This park also features a nice hilltop you can walk around or up for a great view of the city. It's situated on a hill just below Twin Peaks - and although Twin Peaks gets most of our visitors looking for an amazing view - Corona Heights isn't too far behind. Up the street is Buena Vista Park. No dog run here - but it's off-leash friendly. This is where we take Rosie for Morning and Evening walks. This great big park is situated between The Castro and The Haight. It's quite large and you can easily forget you're in the middle of a big city. It's also got some great views of the Golden Gate, Alcatraz, and Angel Island. |
We always take our dog camping with us. He is a congenial friendly dog who hates ducks with a passion. This summer I let him off his run at the campground since being a Sunday night it was mostly deserted. Being him, he immediatley ran and jumped in the lake searching for those dastardly ducks. I lost track of him and was ready to launch a search party when campground security showed up in a golf cart with you know who sitting in the passenger seat with a big grin on his duck eating face.

SF Importer,
Thanks for the great doggie park info for SF. And, from our Anaheim thread, have fun at Disneyland this weekend! :-) |
We took our 2 Bassett Hounds up to the Sierra Nevada to hit the year's first snow. About a 90 min one way drive.
They had never been in the snow before. Funny as ((6)) to watch them try walking around it at first and then sinking into the snow, falling into other people's footprints....or trying to run thur it. All while sniffin' away! HAAAAAAA-roooooooooooooooo!!! Damn dogs! :'( |
For those who are asking about taking their dogs to the Outer Banks of NC (say Duck down to Hatteras) if you call one of the rental listing agents on the Outer Banks they should be able to tell you what is available, where it is located, and if dogs are allowed. That is how we found the oceanfront cottage we took our 'boys' to in Kitty Hawk. We just called and said find us a dog friendly place on the ocean for this date in this area. It was great!

In my thread "Saying Goodbye" I mentioned our traveling dog companion has passed away. He never cared where we went as long as he got to go. Now we would like to take the other 3 dogs somewhere and a beach or lakefront is priority. Thanks for all of the ideas here.
