HappyTrvlr, I think they have such a great reputation (deserved) from many years when it was run by the founder. But lately the food is not as good. I still go on occasion but I do notice the difference.

This thread is making me miss SD as it has been way too long since I made a trip out there (besides 2 ridiculous day trips from Hartford - 5:30 am flight, get to SD at 11:30 PT, work until 6 then redeye home). Those don't count as trips for me...
There is also a Miguel's on Shelter Island near Pt Loma that may be closer to you. Excellent Mexican food. King's Fish in Mission Valley has always been good too. |
Thanks you so much, I like Mexican food.
|
We're on our trip now. Did the trolley tour and went to Miguel's in Old Town. Yesterday we went to lunch at Puesto in La Jolla, and it was fantastic. Gourmet street tacos and the best guacamole. Had dinner at Seersucker, and it was delicious but wow, was it loud! Tried to go to Cody's and the Cottage but they were already closed. La Jolla and Coronado are gorgeous. I'm not ever leaving!

The very best fish tacos, IMO, are at George's upstairs Terrace in La Jolla.
I have lunch at Rubio's often. It has changed, expecially the decor, but they still know what a Pesky Combo is! They have a delicious cilantro lime sea bass bowl (or burrito) just now. And the chipotle orange salad with your choice of protein is also good. |
volcanogirl, great!!
Where are you staying? If you get a chance to go to the La Jolla Cove especially very early in the morning. I was there yesterday around 7.00 am and it was magical. We saw two baby sea lions playing in the waves together and a partial rainbow over the mountains to the east. The ocean temperatures are very, very warm right now. If you like to snorkel there is a reef a few yards off shore and you can see lots of little reef fish. Another option is the La Jolla Shores beach. There are many surf/dive/kayak shops on the small and only main street and you can go on a kayak tour (for example) that takes you out the caves it is really amazing. |
At the Hotel Del. We did get the chance to go to La Jolla Cove - wow, it was beautiful! Saw lots of sea lions there and people snorkeling and kayaking. We could not figure out where to rent the kayaks - thanks for the info. on that. I know we will definitely be going back on another trip. Barbara, thanks for the info. on that. We will try it for our next trip. The fish tacos we had at Puesto were excellent too. They even had a woman making the tortillas fresh right in front of us. Very friendly service.

volcanogirl: I'm so glad you are having a great time. The kayaks that you see in the water off the Cove are from the area directly across from the Cove (about a mile away) as the sea gull flies. It is about 10 minutes by car from the Cove. It is called La Jolla Shores. It is a very small little subdivision area of La Jolla and very easy to access from Coronado. Just take Interstate 5 North to La Jolla Pkwy then you are on Torrey Pines ... but the best bet is to GPS or check Google directions. It's about 25 minutes from Coronado.
https://www.lajollakayak.com/tours/ This is just one of a good number of surf/dive/kayak shops that are within walking distance of La Jolla Shores beach. |
If you are in the La Jolla Shores area a nice Italian restaurant is called Piatti's.

Thanks, nana. And Piatti looks delicious! I would think about staying in La Jolla for a future trip. Are there any charming little hotels you would recommend there?
|
just a little further north from La Jolla is Del Mar. There are a bunch of good restaurants there too. In this hot weather, the two right on the beach would be good. Jake's Del Mar and Poseidon. Be sure to valet park, finding parking there is awful.
|
Thanks, Barbara - any hotels there you could recommend?
|
Valencia is a lovely downtown La Jolla hotel. A little pitside of downtown La Jolla, Lodge at Torrey Pones. In La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
|
Sounds great - thank you, Happy!
|
I am so looking forward to the weather there. It's 20F this morning, lol.
|
We went out on a boat to go whale watching and got sunburned. The weather was gorgeous - 80 and sunny.

Is a great location!! It is right on the beach (literally). Estancia is another nice resort but not right on the beach. http://estancialajolla.com/ http://www.lavalencia.com/ There are a number of less expensive hotels too. http://www.travelodge.com/hotels/cal...hotel-overview |
Thanks, nana. I think we saw La Valencia when we were out walking - beautiful! Estancia looks gorgeous too.
|
volcanogirl, which sailing tour did you choose? Thanks.
|
jet, we went out in a small 6-person boat called a RIB. It zooms right up next to the wildlife. It was recommended to us by the Del and got really good reviews so that's how we chose it. The company name was Adventure RIB Rides. They see whales quite frequently and have seen orcas on occasion. We saw sea lions, dolphins, etc. The guide was excellent. One woman on our tour loved it so much that she had done it five times.
