Favorite Restaurants in San Antonio

Taking our son on a college visit to San Antonio and will be able to have one "alone" night with my husband. Looking for a nice, romantic restaurant. Riverwalk area would be nice since we are staying near there, but not a necessity. Also wouldn't mind tips on a fun place to eat - something an 18 year old might like. Thanks!!

Boudro's on the Riverwalk. For Sunday brunch get someone to tell us the restaurant that is in the "leaning house"--no square walls.

I love the food at Boudro's, but I wouldn't call it romantic. The outside patio is crowded, and indoor seating is often so loud you cannot hear the person next to you. They are famous for their prickly pear margaritas so it is worth a stop for a cocktail. Some other options are Biga on the Banks, Bohannans (not on the river walk but nearby - excellent steak house, but expensive), or the Chart House which is located on the top of the Hemisphere Tower - great bird's eye views.

On the River walk, your son may like Dicks - the wait staff is surly, funny and maybe a little rude - but all in jest.

We will also be visiting San Antonio so I thank you for this post! Gretchen and Katbird - have either of you done the community barge dining at Boudro's? Would you recommend that over eating in the restaurant?

Thanks for the great suggestions - can't wait for our trip!

I have not done the community barge dining, but have had friends who really enjoyed the experience. Best if the evening weather is not too hot and muggy (can't suggest August). The evening weather is just starting to turn pleasant. One other tip regarding the barge dining, make sure you have taken care of the necessities prior to boarding a moving dinning table that doesn't make stops...

P.S., the leaning house was the Liberty Bar north of downtown. The house was closed by the city -it was leaning too much! But the establishment moved to the south of the city, so you can still enjoy the food. Another good choice for breakfast/brunch near south of downtown is the Guenther House. It is a bit touristy, but historic (for San Antonio) and the bakery usually does not disappoint.

For a more fun place, try Mi Tierra. Huge Mexican food restaurant in the Mercado area, close to the Riverwalk. A short drive away or you could walk it. Good food and great, fun setting. Not romantic at all but should be good for your son. And really, anywhere on the River with outside seating is a good choice for a fun place if the weather is ok.

For a nice romantic riverwalk I would go with Biga on the Banks or I believe Le Reve is in this area too....I found Boudros very loud and touristy. The Mansion is quite nice too.
