Favorite place for BBQ in Texas?
The one thing I miss about Texas is the BBQ. There is a place on Hwy 105 near Conroe called Casey Jones. It is a dumpy hole in the wall trailer in the middle of nowhere but the BBQ pork is DIVINE.I have been sorely tempted to drive the 5 hours for one of their sandwiches.

There's a (small) chain in San Antonio called Rudy's. Theirs is good, the cream style corn is good, their peach cobber is good, and their charro (sp) beans are good.

The Salt Lick outside Austin and in the middle of nowhere. It's a dry county, so you bring your own beer or whatever in a cooler, they provide all else. It is sooo good!<BR><BR>As we are now displaced Texans and removed from that shrine, for Father's Day our son had two racks of ribs shipped to us from the Salt Lick. It arrives partially cooked, sauced, and with 20 minutes more on your own grill, is as good as the "real thing"--the biggest juiciest ribs you've ever had. Rudy's is also in Austin and the Salt Lick isn't in a dry county! Great BBQ at both. The Green Mesquite downtown and Wells Branch BBQ up north are also great! Wells Branch is a small family owned place with very friendly people!

Ditto for Rudy's which is a mojor yum fest and Sonny Bryan's in Dallas which is also delicious.

Many years ago, I remember a place in Austin called County Line, where the beer was cold, the ribs were beef, and the sausage was 90% garlic...Are they still around? And do you Texans think they're good?

County Line on the Lake and County Line on the Hill. Yup! Still here and still good! A little more expensive than the previous ones mentioned however!

The Dickey's branch at FM544 and Plano Rd in Plano (north of Dallas). Red Bryan's was my all time fave but there's apts built where it used to be. Funnily enough, I prefer Coke with BBQ for some weird reason (spoken as a beer drinker), maybe the sweetness offsets the spicy sauce.<BR>I feel hungry !<BR>p.

The appropriately titled THE PIG, in Houston on Voss, between Westheimer and San Felipe. Yum yum, and only four tempting blocks from my house.

Near to Austin is the town of Copelands, with a wonderful BBQ joint. The place does no advertising other than word of mouth, and is considered THE place for BBQ in the area.

ANY Bodacious BBQ in NE Texas (Longview in particular). BBQ rocks!

Regarding Paul Rabe's suggestion, the proper spelling of the town is Coupland. (No offense intended, Paul--just pointing this out in case somebody wants to search for it on the Web.) I'm guessing the place he's recommending is The Old Coupland Inn.<BR><BR>Kreuz and Black's in Lockhart (south of Austin on Highway 183) are both supposed to be good, too. Some people say Kreuz was better before it moved to its new modern building, but others say it's still as good.

I'll second the recommendation for Salt Lick outside Austin (I think in Dripping Springs?)--and yes, it *is* a dry county there unless something's changed in the last three years since we moved away. We preferred the Salt Lick to Kruez's but it's all subjective. I agree that County Line in Austin is very good too--both locations. <BR><BR>Mmmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about this topic....

Thank you Don! Right after I posted my answer, I realized it's been almost seventeen years since I visited the place, and I had no idea if it even existed! Apparently, it still does; even if I can't remember its spelling! However, I *DO* remember how good their BBQ is!
