favorite NYC restaurant?

What is your favorite New York City restaurant? Particularly, I'm wondering about the famous ones, ie. Mesa Grill, Tavern on the Green, Union Square Cafe, Balthazar, etc.

Which ones are worth the expense and which are just hype?

Loki Apr 21st, 2003 11:54 AM

Tavern on the Green = hype

The more I go the more I'm convinced that Grammercy Tavern may the best restaurant in the city. It's very consistent and the "Tavern Room" (no reservations) is a great value.

I also like Blue Water Grill for moderate seafood and Nobu for fancy seafood (though it's a casual restaurant).

Babbo.

mclaurie Apr 21st, 2003 01:25 PM

Auerole (bargain lunch), Le Bernardin.

JoeG Apr 21st, 2003 01:28 PM

Loki beat me to the punch recommending Gramercy Tavern.
JoeG.

Jean_Valjean Apr 21st, 2003 01:59 PM

Grammercy Tavern. Really good food, great service, and the candied walnuts at the bar are just amazing.

sonnygen Apr 21st, 2003 02:03 PM

Sushi: Tomoe (bargain)
Japanese: Nobu (splurge for the omikase)
American: Gramercy Tavern is excellent. Blue water grill (get the chilean sea bass)
Italian: Esca was really good, slightly overpriced.

ezmark Apr 21st, 2003 02:12 PM

My favorites are:
Grammercy Tavern & Union Square Cafe
For Great Steak I loooooooove Mark Joseph's Steakhouse which is located near the South Street Seaport
I agree that Tavern on the Green is just HYPE

suzanne Apr 21st, 2003 02:13 PM

Gramercy Tavern. Nothing can compare!

I love Mesa Grill, but it's just not in the same class as Gramercy.

I have yet to go to Union Square Cafe (other than the bar) because reservations have to be made far in advance...and I'm a spontaneous kind of gal.

Tavern on the Green LOOKS really nice (if you like over-the-top gaudiness), but the food is just so-so. The high tourist volume has made it go WAAAYY downhill.

I have never tried Balthazar because it's on a very touristy block.

Blue Water Grill - I've tried it once for lunch and it was only so-so. But with all the recommendations I've seen on Fodor's recently, I just may have to give it a second chance (and try the sea bass)!

actravelgirl Apr 21st, 2003 04:34 PM

I agree with Gramercy Tavern & Babbo. Both are terrific. I also must say that my husband and I love Veritas (right across from Gramercy Tavern). We sit at the bar and have the most wonderful meals. The service is fantastic and the food is wonderful! Not to mention the superb wine list.

Il Mulino (I thought Union Square was only fair)

Patrick Apr 21st, 2003 06:35 PM

Grammercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe, and Gotham Bar and Grill are three of my favorites -- all outstanding. Il Mulino is at the very bottom of my list, do a search and you'll see my very long posts explaining why.

But of a less trendy nature and more classic, it is hard to beat either Cirque 2000 or Le Bernadin.

IL Cortile in Little italy.

mrsbu Apr 21st, 2003 07:37 PM

JUst there yesterday for Easter, Due Amici Mulberry street, Litty Italy. The best food on the street, small, intimate and food to die for without all the fuss and expense of other places in Little Italy. We'll be back in two weeks for my birthday.

LilMsFoodie Apr 22nd, 2003 02:52 AM

I believe Tavern on the Green is still the top grossing restaurant in the US. The crystal room is lovely, the food is so-so...well what can you expect with that sort of volume. The lighting in that room makes everyone look good. Just order simply.

I enjoyed Balthazar the last time I was there. It was fun to watch all the models and Page 6 crowd posturing and not eating much smoking their stupid french cigarettes, etc.

Myself, I dove into the shellfish tower (I forget its name) had a wonderful bottle of Muscadet and some truly decadent french fries.

My favorite restaurants are La Grenouille, one of the old classic French restaurants, and Cafe des Artistes which is almost across the street from Tavern on the Green.

bmw732002 Apr 22nd, 2003 03:53 AM

Gramercy Tavern...the Best!
Babbo...right behind it!

Tavern on the green....Only during the Holiday Season= Crystal Room, Central Park with snowfall....Eat the atmosphere, not the food!!
JOHN

jende Apr 22nd, 2003 09:18 AM

Thanks for all the great replies. I'm shocked by all the Grammercy Tavern fans! I thought it was one of those overrated "famous for the sake of being famous" places, and I'm glad to learn it's not.

traveller212 Apr 22nd, 2003 03:17 PM

I have heard that many out-of-towners are suprised by the smallish "gourmet" portions at Gramercy and the big bill. Mesa Grill is very good and has the celebrity chef aspect if that interests you, but I feel it is a bit overpriced. Union Square Cafe is perfect. Perfect food at the right price (it's expensive but not outrageous and the meal is worth it). If anyone in your group is not an adverturous eater, they will feel more confortable at Union Square Cafe than Gramercy. I don't even consider Tavern on the Green a restuarant, it's a place for events. If you really want to be in Central Park, go for drinks at the Boathouse in Central Park which is still pricey but outside on a lagoon. Balthazaar is past its prime but the setting (both the restaurant and the neighborhood will impress).

Patrick Apr 22nd, 2003 07:03 PM

Traveller212n has just posted one of the wisest posts I've seen in a long time. Although I personally love Grammercy Tavern, I agree with every comment about every place mentioned.

All New Yorkers have their favorites. Babbo is my husbands. I like Felidia and Picholine and Four Seasons! But when we take out people new to NYC we go to Tavern on the Green. Why? The food has gotten much better, its a fun place and you can see outside (esp. Crystal Room). All (or most) cities now have good restaurants thanks to Culinary Institute, but in NY you want to know you are in NY. The scene waiting for your table at Tavern is a mess, should be improved. But once seated we have always had good service. We have even seen "famous persons" there. Also, by NYC standards it is not that expensive. Often people do not really want to spend 100+ per person. But, if you want to do one of the famous...you will enjoy any of the already discussed. Mesa is the most informal. Isn't it great to have so many choices.

FranT Apr 23rd, 2003 05:22 AM

The River Cafe - the views are fantastic and the food's not bad either! 10 of us are flying in from London to celebrate my (big) birthday there.

MMM Apr 26th, 2003 06:32 PM

Japanese sushi (moderately priced) -- Sushi Ann (recently changed owners, used to be Sushisei)

Italian - Il Mulino, though pricey

A much more minimalist, neighborhood sort of place on a relatively remote block in SOHO (technicaly NOLITA), is "Peasant," whose menu is written in Italian only. Ambience is a bit dark, but with high quality food if you are looking for something different (like pasta with rabbit, or grilled sardines, or tasty ossobuco). Also one of the best open kitchens in NY.

American - Mesa Grill, continues to serve a very good meal.

Chinese - Chin Chin

Pizzeria - Angelo's Coal Oven Pizza (57th Street between 6th and 7th).

MMM

My FAVORITE is Le Bernardin.....

I also like Mesa Grill--but it is way more casual...food is very good..

Concierge.com ( a div. of Conde Naste ) just listed these restaurants in NY in the top 50 of American restaurants:

Jean Georges
Daniel
Le Bernardin
Babbo
Nobu
Grammercy Tavern
Gotham Bar and Grill

If I had my druthers, I would go to Le Bernardin and Babbo as my top 2 choices..and definitely make reservations WELL IN ADVANCE!!!

Enjoy!

If you want a super dinner , extrememly inexpensive, try PO in the Village-

It is Mario Batali's ( of Babbo fame) first restaurant...he no longer owns it but the food is FABULOUS!!!!

Greetings! Trying to search for a steakhouse in NYC for Tuesday 5/20/03. Looking for $100/couple, no wine. Maybe a beer or two. Thinking Gallaghers's??? Cannot find the thread I read about earlier with suggestions. Can you help? Thanks!

MFNYC May 15th, 2003 09:19 AM

For a real NY steakhouse experience, go to Peter Lugar's in Brooklyn (if you can get a reservation). I don't know about Gallagher's. I always like the Palm.

princessmu May 15th, 2003 11:33 AM

Cafe Espanol on Bleecker St. The Paella is fantastic and the Sangria pitcher large!
Then Zaytoons in downtown Brooklyn(I forget the name of the st.) Their falafal is #1.

JVS May 15th, 2003 02:19 PM

Payard on Lex
Terrace in the Sky on Amsterdam (since Manhattan is on a grade, this restaurant is on the top of the grade and boasts the highest elevation of any restaurant in Manhattan. The view is, amazing of course and you can sit on the terrace to see it. But since it is on 119th, stay away if you are a "never above 96th-er"

The Tavern Room at Gramercy Tavern is one of our very favorite meals out. True, they don't take reservations, but if you arrive by 7, there's not usually too much of a wait if your party's not big. Also, they have continuous service from lunch through dinner, so it's a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon without a crowd. And if you have to wait and can find a place at the bar, they have great house cocktails. Here, you can have three courses and a glass of wine or a cocktail for under $50 per person, with stellar cooking and service.

Our second runner up in the Danny Meyer empire is Eleven Madison Park. Elegant and impressive space, perfect service, and terrific food (including wonderful desserts). Same price range as Union Square Cafe, but a more sophisticated menu and atmosphere, without being formal, and a much easier resrvation.

For big-spending occasions, Town, in the Chambers Hotel in midtown, is as good as it gets. This place is under the radar of this board, which tends to discuss the Zagat/celebrity chef places more, but I've never spoken to anyone who had a less-than-great experience there, and I'm still savoring the meal I had there a month and a half ago. Really impressive room, with sueded walls and a 30-foot ceiling, very good sevice, and wow! food, often in the "best ____ I've ever had" category. Prix-fixe is around $70, about the same as the back room at Gramercy Tavern (but I'd rather go to Town for the money).

As for celeb chef restaurants, I love Lupa, one of Mario Batalli's ventures (though he doesn't cook there). Best here is to order an assortment of antipasti and go for the pastas (especially all 'amatriciana, duck ragu, spicy cauliflower ragu) in lieu of meat dishes, which can be oversalted sometimes. Great Italian wines and really reasonable prices.

Gotham Bar And Grill

and for more adventurous eaters:

71 Clinton Fresh Food

I agree with Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe being among the favorites. But for a classic New York experience I still don't think you can beat the Four Seasons. The decor is unlike any other, and the food and service are excellent. Gotham Bar and Grill is another wonderful place. Balthazar is fine but not in the same class as the others. Mesa Grill is usually good but much less a "dining experience" as some of the others.

E May 19th, 2003 03:26 PM

On a visit to New York, we enjoyed a small Greek restaurant in Midtown called Molyvos; our dinner there tied with the omikase at Nobu for Best Meal of the Trip. I don't see it mentioned here often (except by me!), but I thought it was wonderful, and a nice find in that it isn't terribly fancy or expensive.

GucciCoochie May 19th, 2003 03:37 PM

Jean Georges because we stay at Trump.

Nobu because I like downtown. Go figure.

And Gramercy Tavern.
