Had another amazing humpback whale experience on third trip to Maui this year (love those AA miles). On April 11, 2005 (at the tail end of the whale season)on a PWF catamaran, we watched a baby whale surface, swim, and slap. His mother surfaced near the boat, fluked up, and dove; she had the whitest pectoral fins that shone turquoise under water. Then the escort (gentleman caller as we say)whale swam straight to our boat just inches below the surface of the water, surfaced at the back of the boat where we were leaning with our camcorder and camera, and dove straight down. We were able to see every inch of his incredible 43 foot body. Even the PWF naturalist was giddy with joy.
To Fodors Editor Ms T about whether we were scared - of course not. Humpbacks are incredibly intelligent and gentle animals. They are curious about us but would never intentionally harm us. |
How cool, Dorothy... take your breath away?? ;;)

As we were starting off on the Road to Hana, we stopped to hike to what I beleive were the twin falls (it was two waterfall, don't recall their exact name). At one point the hiking path became somewhat unclear and we managed to deviate. I was worried and suggested we turn back, but dh insisted that being a country by, hear could hear the running water and find his way out regardless. So on we hiked, nobody else in sight, and eventually came upon a beautiful waterfall cascading into a pool. We dove in, swam around, climbed the rocks, and took fabulous pictures of one another. On our way back we found the twin falls the hike intended, but so had lots of other people. The waterfalls may have been bigger, but the waterfall we had to ourselves was much more spectacular just because it was ours (funny how much more special a spot is when you don't have to wait behind others for your turn to take a picture!).
