Favorite hiking or other guides for Colorado?
Could use some guidance since there are so many books. And please don't hesitate to recommend 'rarer' ones, as I can always request books only to be found in Colorado libraries through an interlibrary loan (done between states). Sometimes the best books are only carried locally really.
Will be travelling to Breckenridge area in mid-June. May try to see Aspen area too & Mesa Verde. Not sure since have a long drive to even get there.
Have seen Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park several times before, but quite some time back.
Thanks so much!

Hi daydreamer. This week I'm planning the itinerary for our summer vacation to Colorado. It'll be our fourth time.
I have found there's not one book that really stands out for Colorado. The two books I'm using now are:
Oddball Colorado, Pohlen
Guide to Colorado Backroads and 4wd Trails, Wells
By no means are these comprehensive guides to the state, but they have interesting info.
I got good hikes from the Best Hikes with Children in Colorado. I found that even if you don't have kids, these books are a good source of info for hikes. That is, unless you're interested in backpacking for several days.
One of my favorite hikes in Colorado is to Hanging Lake. The trailhead is off I-70 near Glenwood Springs.

Oh dear, it's been a while. I think it is about 3 - 3.5 miles. We did it when our kids were younger. I remember it was a fairly steep uphill for about a mile. But the lake and waterfalls were well worth the effort.

Be sure to make the time to check out Mesa Verde, which is celebrating its 100 birthday this year with lots of special events. http://www.mesaverde2006.org/
