Favorite day of the year in your city?

Recently, i was out with some friends when the discussion turned to our favorite day of the year in our city, Philadelphia. While the 4th of July garnered some votes, most of us agreed that New Years Day is our favorite day of the year. While many will associate that day with the Mummers strut up Broad Street, it's their return to "Two Street" that is the highlight of the day for us. For those of you who don't know "Two Street" refers to the section of 2nd Street south of Washington Avenue. This is where most of the Mummers' clubhouses are found.

So, now I'm curious. What's your favorite day of the year in your city?

My city has 2,000 population and only one stoplight. The next closest light is 15 miles away. Christmas would get my vote.

I live in NYC and like the week of 4th of July for all of the opposite reasons. In our neighborhood people go away and it is quiet.

I guess it used to be Cinco de Mayo, but several years ago some people got out of hand and our city doesn't deal well with trouble makers, so now we don't have the big celebration anymore. That's always the response - something happens, shut it down. It was fun while it lasted though.

Yes - the week of the 4th NYC is deserted. All of the locals going to the beach or mountains more than make up for the influx of tourists.

I love Christmas Eve day. Everything is done. All of the business travelers and most of the tourists have gone home. A good time to do Christmas stuff and have it less crowded and a nice dinner with friends - since Christmas Day is for family.

I lived in NYC for a few years, so I understand what you're saying about the week of 4th of July. I always liked that and Labor Day weekend for the same reason.

I live in NYC also but my favorite is a crisp day in October -- any will do. I like to take a walk in Central Park and remember the great month of October, 1973.

My favorite day of the year in any city is my birthday! In my city it's usually a nice day, the tourist are gone and it's never too hot and it rarely rains on that day in Feb.

Fra, I was about to write the same thing! (Well, not the Oct '73 bit; then I was a first-grader living in Brookline, MA...)

A cloudless day in October in NYC when the air is still warm but no longer humid and you need to carry (but not necessarily wear) a sweater. Other than the long Columbus Weekend, not a ton of tourists around because everyone is back to being busy with school and work.

The weekend of the annual DUMBO Arts Festival here in Brooklyn often gets days like that. The most memorable for me was in 2001, the skies that same piercing blue. I just remember such a sense of calm and beauty that day.

Oh, just the usual "salad days" stuff -- senior in college, new girlfriend, great hangout (Cedar Tavern) good friends, etc. Then, when some of that went south, as it always does, we'd look back and wonder how October had seemed to hold such promise.

Ahhh - I sort of thought it was like that.
I completely understand.

TS Eliot thought April was the cruellest month for essentially the same reason. It holds promise that is rarely fulfilled.

But back to the happy days.

I too like the first day of autumn when the air is crisp and you need to close the collar of your jacket.

Not a particular day but the time of year I like best in Boston is mid to late September when summer is fading and the mornings are crisp and cool.
Then if you're lucky it warms up in the afternoon, the skies are cloudless and blue and the leaves are just starting to turn.

Great time to be outdoors and savour the delights of a city like Boston.
