Father-daughter trip--help us pick where to go
 

Hi folks,

My father (65) and I (32) want to take a father-daughter vacation at the beginning of September for 10 days. We are both in good health, are active, and like adventure/outdoors. We have a flexible budget so money is not really an issue. Can you help us decide where to go in September? Thanks for your help!

Hawaii is my stock answer to very open-ended questions like this.

Where are you starting this trip from? Where have you visited previously? What kinds of things did you have in mind?

We are coming from Colorado. We enjoy just about everything but we are looking for an outdoor adventure (i.e. hiking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, etc.) for this trip.

We have traveled to Hawaii, Florida, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Washington D.C., and California several times so we're looking elsewhere.

Oregon or Washington --- no specific recommendations, but they have scenic beauty, tons of outdoor options, and wonderful cities and towns.

How about one of those rafting trips on the Colorado River into the Grand Canyon. Someone did a trip report on it last year and it sounded unforgettable.

british columbia is not only beautiful but offers all types of sporting situations.

vancouver.. whistler ( you will really find a lot to do there).

stop at furray creek golf club on way to whistler at least for a drink or lunch. gorgeous area follwoing the "fjord" up into the mountains.

and perhaps you have time to drive to banff and jasper .. not sure.

you could also cross over to vancouver island for part of the trip.the ferry rides are fun.

or.. seattle and the san juan islands.. ( more ferries). all beautiful. go on whale watching trip. bicycle tours.. sailing.

add the olympic peninsula.(another ferry) stay at crescent lake lodge in the park.

I also would suggest the Pacific Northwest. It will be cooler in September, however. So, the higher the elevation... well, you know. You live in CO! :)

BC Canada or Seattle or Portland. Beautiful and lots of great outdoor stuff to do.

We are going to the Canadian Rockies this Sept. It is a hiker's dream and the scenery is fantastic. I think you and your Dad would love it.

You would fly into Calgary and then drive to Banff/Lake Louise/Jasper

I like the Pacific Northwest idea, or a Montana/ Glacier Natl. Park and Wyoming trip. Generally beautiful in early Sept. in both regions.

Yellowstone is nice and not so crowded then.

Also a vote for South and North Dakota- the Black Hills and Custer in South Dakota and Teddy Roosevelt National Park in ND.

Canadian Rockies are gorgeous and definitely worth a visit.

September is a great time for New England. Go to Maine and hike up Mt Katahdin. then go to Acadia for hiking and mountain biking and kayaking.

My dad and I have decided to hike in the Canadian Rockies. Exciting!

I would go to Oahu, Hawaii. Mainly Honoululu. Especially if money isn't an issue. My Grandmother is (75)and I both enjoyed the trip. There is tons of outdoor things you can do there. Like climbing Diamond Head National Park or hanging out at Wakiki Beach. Lots of things you two can both do and have tons of fun.

It was the best trip that My Grandmother and I have ever taken together! I would highly recommend it, if you have the means when it comes to how much it will cost you.

Ireland! I took my father-in-law there for 10 days and we both loved it. Lots of restored castles, reasonably priced bed & breakfasts and the most friendly people. I have traveled around the world and still say Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen. Be sure to buy a good road map.

the appalachian mountains from the south-north east have gorgeous leaf color then. i can only personally speak about western north carolina, since i lived there. it is beautiful and there is a ton to do - both outdoors and in Asheville, NC. i also love the pacific northwest, particularly washington state and portland, oregon. and yosemite in northern california, but you said you've been to CA before and 10 days is a lot in yosemite. i recommend that you consider WNC/Asheville because the weather will be warmer and less iffy than it might be in the pacific northwest!

also, if you do Western NC you can also take a short trip down to Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA - both are about 4 hours, easy driving, from Asheville and are PERFECT in september.
