Fastest Route from Albuquerque to Austin
We are traveling to Austin from Albuquerque in a few months and see there a few
ways to get there. Since we are interested in making good time with few stops or
hold ups in small towns, can someone well traveled give me some tips?

We drive this route at least 2-3 times every year. The route Jayne suggested is OK, but we have found another route that is actually faster and a bit less boring. Take I-40 East to Santa Rosa then take 84 to Fort Sumner. Continue through Lubbock, Tx.
Take the exit to I-20 East. You have 2 choices here to get to Coleman. You can take 70 to go to Winters which turns into 153 (which is kind of winding, but you get a great view of the windmill farms). The other way which we usually go (so that we can get a Starbucks and we've seen the windmill farms many times) is the stay on I-20 until you get to Abilene and then take 84 to Coleman.
Stay on 84 from Coleman until you get to Brownwood and then take 183. You will go through Goldwaithe and Lampasses. 183 close to Austin divides into 183 or the toll road. For maximum time, take the toll. You can fly on that!
There are a few small town delays, but time wise, we've always found this the fastest route. Coming in to Austin from 290 always has tremendous traffic all the time!!! Even though our house is in South Austin close to Zilker Park which makes it closer to 290, with the toll on 183, it's the fastest and easiest route.
