Thanks all for following this TR. We flew home and noticed that one of the Air Canada films on offer was a doc directed by an old student of mine titled 'This Changes Everything'. His wife Naomi Klein was the narrator. Another flick on offer was ironic: the new biopic about President Reagan (Dennis Quaid). Reagan's ranch was featured in the film. We conclude with music. Lord Huron is a Cali band singing live about Travel. *I failed to post the other, which was a Dylan classic presented here coz we saw the new biopic about him in SB--YouTube vexed me.
Now its time for us to begin work on our loooong-overdue TR for Calabria and Rome.
I am done. The end.

Great photos of my beloved town. We live in a Jeff Shelton house and are very appreciative of his creativity and whimsy. He designs tiles that can be shipped all over.

Thanks once again macD. It must be fun to live in such a unique structure, instead of something less creative and less unique.
Wanted to give a pair of forgotten promised shout-outs here.

Firstly, to the friendly folks who run the Santa Barbara Hostel nearby the MOXI museum. We had a long chat with front desk staff there and were invited to their Saturday BBQ. Look for their old yellow school shortbus parked close to the entrance.
Secondly, we both appreciated the friendly staffers at the nearby State Street Santa Barbara Visitors Center. They tolerated us quirky Canadians wearing Tilley hats and patiently gave us advice while answering our million questions.

zebec, thanks again for this excellent TR. Cool that you got to meet the fabled Maitais!

z and macdogmom, a quick story: on our visit my wife and I were walking down Chapala Street and stopped to admire a superbly beautiful building. A woman came out and asked if we wanted to have a look inside one of the apartments? Sure! It turned out she was a realtor and I believe she wanted us inside when some prospective buyers came over, to make it appear as if there was another interested party.

It may have worked, because about a week later it was listed as sold, for something like $2.2M.

Turns out it was a Jeff Shelton building. We had never herd of him before that. This is the place:

Nelson, that is a very interesting story. Not everyone would've cottoned onto the fact of that agent's true intent. I know we probably wouldn't have.
Btw, we'd like to have spent more time with the Maitais but they were due back at their cult compound ('The Sylvan Knowers of The Way') by 3:30, when apparently the cosmic energy flow from planet Triskelion dissipates to dangerously low levels.

That Shelton building is the El Andaluz, which we were told was a hotel. But obviously, its role has changed and perhaps its now a condo or a combo. We passed it while on the Land Shark Tour and being in a raised vehicle then allowed us all a glimpse of the upper area. Both the Pistachio and the Ablitt houses are close by, so visitors may do a three-fer mini-Shelton tour right there.

So folks, I'm interested in hearing where everybody is going to travel next. Anyone want to share here?

When we did a remodel the contractor had us go down to those apt/condos (never been a hotel in my memory) and I checked out some things in one of the condos that were being remodeled. We also went to look at different Shelton garage doors when we had to repaint our doors. He’s famous for his stenciled door in great colors. He has houses all over SB and montecito and a couple of apartments/condos downtown. I know one of them has been available for short term renting.

Our shelton garage door special…

Also, after traveling a lot fo the last 15-20 years we are content to go back and forth from Santa Barbara to Bay Area (apartment in Menlo Park) and that’s all the traveling we are up for these days.

Damn, how did I miss this???? Guess I haven't been on the US Board recently. Excellent report, and it has given us some fantastic ideas, since Tracy retires in a week. You know that I Was Made For Dancin', so I really coveted that Leif Garrett autograph. Thanks, however, for the Bay City Rollers photo, which I look at every Saturday Night. Garbo says hi and thanks for the present. She wears it proudly, especially when she carps at me for not feeding her enough. Great stuff!!! I am done ... the Vagrants (not the 1960s group)
