Far View Lodge at Mesa Verde NP
We are planning to stay at Far View Lodge for one night, then one night outside the park, at the beginning of July. I know it will be hot, but will it be unbearably hot overnight in the Lodge where there is no air conditioning? From all I've read here and elsewhere, it makes sense to stay in the park to make it easier to get tickets for tours. I thought if we stayed there the night we arrive, then we could stay somewhere with air and a pool the next night. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

ARe there only rooms in the lodge? We stayed there a few years ago, and were in little buildings with about 4 units each. They had good cross ventilation and I don't remember the rooms being uncomfortable at all, despite the days being very hot. This was with 4 of us in the room too.
It was so nice staying in the park. You get to wander around the lesser sites after the crowds are gone, and it is easy to be first in line for tickets the next morning.
Don't forget to make dinner reservations before you arrive..the dining room had incredible food. We had an early dinner (about 5:30 to keep our kids happy) then had several hours to wander the park until sunset.
The next day we had plenty of time to see three of the major sites, tour the museum, and then left.

Chances are that you will feel fairly comfortable at the lodge. I live at approximately the same elevation 25 miles from the lodge, and don't have A/C. Every couple of years, it will be uncomfortably hot for a few days, and unfortunately, early July is the most likely time for this to happen. It's more likely to be a little warm (80s) at sundown, but very dry, and dropping into the 50s overnight. If it looks like it will be really hot, ask for a ground floor room if there's more than one story. They might even agree to waive the reservation if they know it will be too hot to sleep.

travellyn, if it cools down as yu say during the night, then I think we'll be fine.
Icuy, thanks for the tip about dinner reservations. I hadn't thought about that yet. My kids are older teens, so we don't eat very early, but we certainly do eat!

HI,
Far View Lodge is a series of one-story, motel-type units. They are rustic, small, pleasant and delightful.. Each has a balcony that looks out over the scenery and the distance views are wonderful.. Food in dining room is very good. Also, there is a roof-top patio that was a grand place for a drink or coffee. Don't expect a "lodge" thatlooks like Yellowstone or Grand Canyon or any of those. This is a basic, but enjoyable, experience.
