Far View Lodge

My wife and I will be going to visit Mesa Verde. We are trying to decide whether to stay in Durango both nights (before and after visiting Mesa Verde) or to spend one night at the Far View Lodge in the Park.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Our stay at Far View was so long [email protected] years!--that this may not be useful, but since you've had no other responses so far, I'll give my opinion. I remember the Lodge as delightful, all rooms with balconies and lovely views (as name implies). It's a lot more relaxed to come in from a day exploringMesa Verde and stay right in the park instead of taking the long drive back to Durango (can't remember how long, but it seemed pretty far when we visited there a few years ago). Make sure the restaurant is open though, or you'll spend an even longer time trying to find food.

It's a long way from Durango. About 30 miles to Park entrance & another 13 or so to Far View Lodge. Since you must get tickets for some of the more interesting Mesa Verde sites (Balcony House, Cliff Palace, etc), you need to get to Visitors Center early in day. Great place to visit. May want to consider Cortez for overnight? Only 10 miles from Park entrance.

I don't know if this is still helpful, but we stayed at Far View Lodge about 3 years ago. It was just great for us--quiet, deer outside the door, lots of stars to see at night. Then we got an early start on the sightseeing before it got too hot. Not luxurious or any exciting nightlife, but who cares!

Totally agree with the previous poster. It makes a lot sense for you to stay at the Far View Lodge.
