Re Powells, it actually started on 57th St. in Chicago, in the neighborhood of Hyde Park and it is still there. It is, of course, much smaller than the Powells in Portland, which is humongous.

I don't think it's famous, but my favorite used book store in Phila. is the Book Trader across from Christ Church near 2nd and Market Sts.

In Sarasota, I like the Main Street Bookshop for their large selection of remaindered books.

My favorite bookstore is the Strand in NYC.

I didn't know that about Powell's starting in Chicago. I always make a beeline to Powell's when I'm in Portland.

I don't know that Philadelphia has any "famous" bookstores, but we do have some great places to browse and buy books:
- Joe Fox (traditional independent)
- The AIA (American Institute of Architechts)
- Giovanni's Room (LGBT)
- Robin's (lefty politics and culture)
- Wooden Shoe (even leftier)
- the Reading Terminal Cook Book Stall
- Garland of Letters (religion and spirituality)

I won't even get into the fabulous used bookstores in Philadelphia.
