What about vrbo.com? I use that for every other place I visit, but not Michigan - probably because I have enough friends in this state I can stay with. Robbydee - if you're open to staying in a private rental, this might be the perfect solution to finding a quiet lake-front property.
Pepper - can't think of any names right now, except for places on Mackinac Island if you'd like to go there, or Stafford's in Petoskey is nice too. Try visiting michigan.org, or michiganswestcoast.com for ideas. Manistee has become a cool little town, but I probably wouldn't recommend more than a few days there - I think you'd run out of things to do.

Thanks for all your suggestions...I really like the michigan.org site - I've been looking at it until my eyes bleed...
We'll figure it out; maybe Manistee isn't too bad these days...
We're looking for only a couple of days anyway, since we also want to try to take the train from Grand Rapids into Chicago and see King Tut at the Field Museum.
And...go up to Munising (Sunset Motel) and see the shipwrecks on the glassbottom boat. Sounds like I'll need more than the 10 days I've already planned for .
I'm exhusted already!!!

I'm a big fan of Marriott resorts, so I suggest the Inn at Bay Harbor http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/PLNBR
It's near the Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Petosky areas, which Michiganders love so much (for good reason!). It's also on Lake Michigan, which I think is our clearest, most lovely Great Lake.
The hotel is the only Marriott resort in Michigan, rather upscale - what I would call NICE, NICE, NICE, and I am rather picky. It looks very charming inside and out. I've only visited - haven't had the opportunity to stay there, yet, since it books up so fast!

Interesting news re this kind of request:
There was a long news story this week on a local IL/IN channel concerning a very high end resort that was slated to be built at the Indiana Dunes State Park from its conception, nearly a century ago. Original plans many, many decades old are starting to come to the planning and permit stages. Meanwhile, there's some vocal public and political support for/towards a pristine condition movement re this unused section of the Indiana Dunes State Park.
If it comes about and IN follows through with its plans, then there will be a robbydee type place next to the Dunes shoreline by 2010. It will be in IN, not MI and will be owned by the State of IN, and run by out-sourced venues.

Robbydee, how about Petoskey? It's a great town for shopping and exploring. The Stafford's Perry Inn is waterfront and may fulfil your "nice, nice, nice" requirement. We always enjoyed eating there while up north. Here's the website:

Good luck and have a great Michigan vacation!
