Family weekend in gettysburg-November

Hi
Our family (kids are 14 and 10) will travel from Wilmington, Delaware for 3 days after Thanksgiving. We would need to return to western Massachusetts on day 3.
We're thinking of seeing Gettsysburg and the environs as time allows. Does anyone have any experienced ideas re:things to do, places to stay...I'm just starting my info gathering. We've been to Williamsburg and D.C. once. Gave some thought to seeing D.C. again as we were only there a day and didn't see everything. Opinions about D.C. vs. Gettysburg? (My son's class trip will be in D.C. this spring!)
Thanks
Marylouise

I think your question depends a bit upon whether you are interested in the civil war---most people say they find
gettysburg very moving--there is a somewhat prcey b & b near gettyburg where the owner is quite knowledgeable about the battle--i think there was an article in the ny times a few weeks ago about it...I vot efor gettysburg

Hi Mary,

Gettysburg is great for a day or 2. The Gettystown Inn is right in the middle of town and is a nice B&B. Next door is the Dobbin House Tavern, a great little "Cellar" with wonderful Civil War era dishes. We stayed at the Inn and walked to everything from there.

Some advice: Do the lighted map, it sounded boring to me - but made everything come together.

Do tour the Eisenhower Farm (sign up for this at the National Park Museum)

DON'T be tempted to pay for any of the museums in town (including the famous bedroom where Lincoln wrote his speech) Believe me you will get much more out of a tour bus through the battle field.

Have fun.

Just got back from Gettysburg this week. If you want to try a B&B, check with Battlefield B&B on Emmitsburg Rd. It's on 46 acres and they do take kids under 12 yrs. Charlie (the owner) also does history demonstrations in the morning and gets the kids involved. Like I said, be sure and check because a lot of places don't take kids under 12 yrs.
