Family Vacation -Midwest / Northeast

We are looking for a few ideas as we plan for a summer family vacation. We will be driving from Columbus, Ohio and at this point we are looking more at locations than specifics about lodging. Some areas we have considered so far are New Hampshire, Vermont, Adirondack's, Finger lakes, Pocono's, and the Smokey's, but we are open to other ideas as well. We enjoy being out and away from the bigger cities. Please share some of your favorite places and some of the recreational opportunities.

Vermont and NH make great family destinations. Depending on your budget and ages of the kids, you might enjoy Storyland in Glen NH. Its a small old fashioned sort of amusement park geared for kids under 8. Its in the White Mountains. The area is really nice. check out the Nordic Village for condos to rent. You could also look into staying at the Mt. Washington - a grand hotel with the most beautiful porch in the world. There are tons of activities there for families - swimming, golf, fishing, horseback riding, tennis etc.

Stowe VT is another favorite. Trapp Family Lodge is lovely, the recreational bike trial is fun, Ben & Jerry's for ice cream. Its all good.

You don't say what you want to do, but how about northern Michigan or southern Ontario?

We enjoy doing a variety of things: Taking short hikes, Canoe, Swim, Shop, Tour museums... And we also like some time to relax and enjoy the scenery!
Keep the input coming!

Some suggestions: Outer Banks, Charleston, SC, West Virginia. Have you been to Ohio's northcoast? You could spend a day or 2 in Cleveland, (Art Museum, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Science Museum) spend a day at Cedar Point, and visit the Lake Erie Islands.
