family trip to maui
 

I will be traveling to Maui with my family next June for 2 weeks. I am thinking about splitting my time between the Hyatt and the Fairmont. I would like to tour Haliakala at sunrise and the road to Hana in the same day. Is this possible and how difficult is it to drive ourselves to Haliakala in the dark? Is the ride closer to Hyatt area or Fairmont area? We would like to do this trip either the first or second day after we arrive.

I wouldnt do both the same day. Remember, to do the sunrise at Haleakala
you have to get up early early. Hana will really take the wind out of your sails by itself. When we did the drive to Haleakala (which was fine in the dark) we left at 2 am by the time the afternoon came around we were both ready for a nap. Hana was the same way...left early(6am or so)stopped for breakfast in Pa'ia. we didnt get back to pa'ia until 8 pm. We have done orlando (5 parks 5 days) so we are very active on our trips but I wouldnt attempt it. BTW it would be easier to do sunrise early in your trip to make it easier.

I agree with Panhandle for the reasons stated--don't do them both in one day. It's exhausting and a lot of driving. And the Wailea area is definitely closer to Haleakala and Hana. You should try to do the stuff you have to get up early for at the start of your trip because your body will still be on mainland time.

We did both in the same day and I would definately NOT recommend it! I was feeling pretty terrible by the end of the day...car sick and very tired! It took a massage the next day to make me feel better!!!

Thanks for the info. I think I will split it up, don't want to ruin the vacation the first couple of days. I thought that Wailea was closer to both Haliakala and Hana, but was told otherwise by a travel agent.

Thanks Jon for the info. I have been to your website and it was very informative. Because I can't decide between the 2 hotels, is why I thought I would do them both. They both have different things to offer and plus the suites are very appealing. I can't imagine staying in 1 room with my kids for almost 2 weeks. Lisa

I think it's a good idea to stay in two different areas, especially with two weeks. There's so much to see and do in both west and south maui, and each has a different character. With two home bases, you won't have to drive as much to see everything on the different parts of the island. And yes, Wailea IS closer to Haleakala and Hana. Maui Revealed has a chart of driving times, and Wailea-Haleakala is 105 min, and Kaanapali-Haleakala is 135 min. I've never heard anyone say different.

Wow, that is really wierd. I realise when I was hitting POST that this post was 3 years old. So why did it come up in the first few when I logged on just now? Very odd.

I can't tell you why that happened, but it's not the only odd thing. Every so often, posts seem to duplicate themselves over and over (on the same page). What's THAT about? Belle.
