And as Nana suggests - visit Balboa Park - with the world renowned San Diego Zoo (and it's sister - Safari Park - formerly known as Wild Animal Park - 30 miles north outside of Escondido), the other museums in the park, the rose garden, etc - and two different IMAX theaters with great films/features - one at the SD Natural History Museum and just across the Prado at the Rueben E. Fleet - which also has some very interesting science exhibits/games. http://www.sandiego.org/members/visi...lboa-park.aspx

There is also Sea World, driving over to Coronado, getting up to Julian at 4,000 plus feet to see the old mines and have some great apple pie - and on and on, with less traffic/congestion than you have in LA/Orange County.

And from Oceanside south to the Strand/Coronado and even further - great beaches in San Diego, and again, check out condos - which usually are less than houses yet give you what you need for a family.

Uno Mas - my niece took surfing lessons for 3? days at a great shop in Pacific Beach - and loved the whole program. I will have to drive by to get the name - but there are other good places to take surfing lessons/try it out. https://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-...&ved=0COIBELYD

Given that you're trying to tighten the budget, I'd look for a little hotel by the beach, maybe with a pool, or kitchenette, but that is more personal or quirky than a chain hotel.

Add some Orange County Beaches to your list; they're beautiful. OC will have places for your kids to do surf lessons. You can also easily reach Disneyland from them. The only problem renting here is that it's no fun to drive to Universal Studios or Hollywood from Orange County.

Stumbled upon this Laguna Beach hotel right on the water, and it's what I'm getting at. I have NOT stayed at this particular hotel, but the Joie de Vivre chain has a good rep on this board and I have stayed at their affiliate in DC.

Did a quick search for 4 people, July 22 used as test date:
$206 for 2 double beds no view
$245 for 2 double beds view
$300 for a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchenette, no view
All right on the beach. Includes pool.
