Family suites in Manhattan NYC in $250 price range? Impossible?

Hello, Can anyone recommend a hotel or alternative lodging that has an actual bedroom in NYC in the $250 range? We absolutely need a separate bedroom because our daughter goes to sleep at 7pm and unless we all want to be lights out at 7pm, then we need the ability to shut the door. The couple times we've tried us all in one room were not so hot. We hope to be in a residential area with close access to subway station rather than busier tourist spots like times square, Broadway, etc. I looked at The Beacon, San Carlos, Off Soho Suites, Radio City Apartments and East Village Suites and they are all either booked for our time period or out of our price range. (or in the case of the East Village Suites in a 3rd floor walk up which isn't going to work for us) I could go as high as $270 with taxes included. I know this is a seemingly impossible task in Manhattan, some of the lower budget hotels are on par with London prices! I am looking at a couple of apartments through AirBnB, but it doesn't seem to make sense to pay a $100 cleaning fee and a $90 booking fee for only 4 nights. Also Airbnb wants all the money up front, I'd prefer to book through a hotel with just a credit card guarantee.

Any suggestions for other hotel/apartment suites? IWe're flexible on location. All I need is a decent coffee shop and I'm happy. We wont be doing much touring, this is just a quick wrap up from visiting family, so we'll just be hanging around the city relaxing, eating, shopping. I'd like to stay in the Greenwhich Village area, but it's mostly boutique hotels there with no bedrooms.

Impossible to find something in this price range?

I think it is probably out of your price range, but we love the Doubletree at Times Square because of their bedroom and living room accommodations.

Oh sorry, just saw you don't want Times Square.

Good luck.

I know you'd prefer not to stay near Times Square, but the Hotel at Times Square, which is part of the Applecore Hotels group, is showing a 2 room suite (1 king bed/1 queen bed) for $279.99 + tax when I check some dates. The photo shows a doorway between the 2 rooms but not sure if there's a door or just an entryway. You could always call and check with their main reservations number if one of their other properties has what you're looking for if this isn't suitable. Good luck, I know when our kids were younger we were in the same situation.

Have you tried the Salisbury hotel?

Have you looked at the Eastgate Towers? the building is older but everything is clean and the rooms are large. The neighborhood is a mix of residential and business and prices are shockingly low for Manhattan - some nights only about $200 plus tax.

But - you don;t say when you are coming to NYC - these prices may not be valid in the higher fall season.

While you may find a stray special that fits your price range, this is not a realistic budget for such a room in NYC, I'm sorry to say. Maybe in January or February but rarely during the rest of the year. If you want a room at this price, you're going to have to make some compromises like accepting a 3rd-floor walk-up.

And I would advise against AirBnB or VRBO (strongly). Indepedent apartment rentals (as opposed to staying in a room in someone's home) are illegal in NYC for less than 30 days, so if something goes wrong you have no legal recourse. Plus, there are a lot of outright scams.

I was going to recommend the Embassy Suites in lower Manhattan, but I see that it has closed.

It hasn't exactly closed. It's been transformed into a Conrad Hotel and doubled its prices. It also has a great restaurant, North End Grill, as well as a Shake Shack.

Try The Beacon. Probably more expensive, but it has one bedroom suites on the upper westside in a great neighborhood.

What are your travel dates? That will make all the difference in hotel prices.

Check out bedandbreakfast.com - several B and b's there (legit ones) have true suites.

I find it odd that you can't travel without having a door that closes with a young child.

Thank you for the replies, I will check out these suggestions now! Sadly we are going in high season, second week in October. I have been reading about the new rental laws. Doesnt' that mean that websites like VRBO and Airbnb are committing a crime by facilitating this? To be honest it's looking like we need to rent an apartment to stay on budget. I found 2 great apartments between $250-$270, but I would agree that the rental laws are a concern. I will keep checking the hotels you all mentioned first.

Hello Myztery, nice to hear from you again my friend! Yes, still need that separate bedroom, it's a pain I know, pain in the checkbook

I don't know enough about law to say if they are committing crimes, but they certainly are allowing other people who might be committing crimes to list on their sites. I hope you can read through the very recent information about this topic here http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...r-new-york.cfm

That's funny I read through the thread and someone said they didn't like the idea of staying in someone's private apartment. I actually love that, it feels much cozier. I guess I will have to ask the 2 prospective apartments about the law and see what they say, I'm actually just curious at this point. They have a similar newish law in Paris and we still rented apartments there a couple times since it came out. It is a risk for sure. I guess if everything went sour we'd just go back to Long Island. A lot to think about for sure.

My husband has stayed at the larchmont before in the east village. They have a family suite for $270 I think, but it looks ghastly from the one photo on the website. Maybe I can call and see if they have more photos. It also looks like it's just 2 bedrooms with an adjoining inner door. I will be the one staying in after 7pm while the little one sleeps, so I was hoping to have a comfy living room or a patio or something to read or watch tv since I wont be soaking up the nightlife. I'm fine with that, I feel like I've enjoyed NYC many times when I was child free and it's just a season that wont last forever!

Some people like apartments, some prefer hotels. Both options oare understandable to me.
"I guess I will have to ask the 2 prospective apartments about the law and see what they say" Expect people to lie or pretend they don't anything about it, or say don't worry, etc.

Unless they can point you to their certificate of occupancy and show how what it says matches up with the law, it is very unlikely that an individual apartment could be rented legally for under 30 days. Then there are the subpar accomodations that are not as described and the total scams that are more common than you might think.
Even some B&B set ups (multiple apartments or whole buildings) are not necessarily legal though it is somewhat more likely that they are operating "professionally" and know something about the issue.

It may be unfortunate, but many places--NYC, Hawaii, Tuscany, Paris, have lodging that is too expensive for many people and the traveler has to decide what compromises to make--fewer days visiting, smaller room, less desirable location. A completely illegal operation is not a "compromise" many/most would be willing to make

Found this place, 3rd floor walk up, semi shared bathroom. I don't mind the walk up if there's a place downstairs to store the stroller, waiting to hear back on that. $175 a night, it's almost half of the places we've been looking it. The website says the bathroom is shared by a man who has an office next to the suite from 9am-6pm. Weird, but I can work with that.
