Family Roadtrip from Atlanta in December

We live in Atlanta and I'd like recommendations to visit in December for my family of 5. Most of the suggestions I've seen that are within a 5 hour drive are hiking destinations, and I think it will be too cold to enjoy this time of year. Keeping in mind the ages of my children are 11, 17, and 20, a historical location or snow skiing would be ideal, but I don't think there's a close enough location to ski!

You can ski the NC mountains--but snow may be a problem and it won't be particularly good.
How long a trip do you want? Birmingham and Montgomery?
Pensacola?
Charleston--ah, yes.
Asheville/Charlotte/Winston Salem?

You could go to the Florida panhandle (Destin area). Not historic and not ski, but probably warm enough.

Savannah would also work.

You also might try Mobile, Alabama. It's historic, it's got a great new museum (Gulfquest National Museum of the Gulf of Mexico) great seafood, friendly people, and the weather should be pretty good. We visited there for one nite recently and will return in the spring.

The Blue Ridge Mountains in South and North Carolina have some great hiking trails. The Blue Ridge Parkway has trails that lead to historic sites.

if you need a cheap taxi transfer service i would check out OnCabs. They can give you a nice break from the monotony of driving and let you enjoy the sights in some of the cities you stop in
