Chama is not really on the way to Durango, but you can sidetrack to get there.

General comments: you bring back memories of our family with three kids going on camping vacations West...from Peoria and Carbondale. Much to see out West and seems you already know where you are headed...but that first day travel is much too long.

With your small kids you need to think a lot about being in the car for long days, i.e., some games and stops and treats and playgrounds. Trains, swimming, river raft OK but do think "kids" not sightseeing with too much hiking in the hot summer. Hence some hesitation about Mesa Verde, Canyonland, also wine fest sounds pretty adult oriented to me. Isn't Ghost Ranch a church related conference center not a tourist site?

We've been out West various times and would see Rocky Mountain Nat'l Pk and Black Hills as more likely destinations. Just my two bits worth.

Bill in Boston (for last two years coming from Middle West)

Added note: having avoided "Billy" growing up now my wife of 58 years only calls me that when joking )-:

Osarksbill,
Glad to inspire some good memories for you! We might not see Ghost Ranch after all. It is out of the way and although it may be a beautiful area, not sure if we can get it in. You are right about all the hiking, but if its becomes too much for the kiddies then we will just head back to Santa Fe to our pool!! Thanks so much for your two bits

Yes, but they offer some walking tours and have hiking trails.

<Am I missing anything worth seeing?> Uh yeah! Like MOST of Colorado!! LOL!! But it sounds like you really want to concentrate on New Mexico for this trip, which I think is a good idea.

If you do come thru Denver, you should make a stop at Dinosaur Ridge - it is right off of 470 on the western side of town. It has real dinosaur prints and a kid friendly Visitors Center.

I would do Tuesday and night at MV and head to Moab by noon Wednesday, do Canyonlands, Island in the Sky Wed afternoon/early evening and Arches Thursday and as much of Friday as possible.

This would allow you do perhaps do a ranger led tour at Mesa Verde and maybe one at Arches too.

Oh. I forgot about Chama. That is a pretty neat place too. In addition to the raliroad it has an old west feel.

Zoos may not be your thing, but the Omaha Zoo really is amazing. Just voted the best in the country, and for good reason! If you're into Food Network at all there are several "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" that have been featured in Omaha and also a cool Cupcake Wars contestant. P.S. Omaha will be all over the media for the next two weeks with the College World Series and the Olympic Swim Trials - - you may be sad that you skipped us when you hear all the lovely things that will be featured! And yes, I get that the Nebraska drive is a stitch boring : ) but Omaha is pretty awesome.
