Family Reunion in Virginia?
We are looking for a good location for a weekend family reunion next summer that would be convenient for family living in MD, VA and NC. Somewhere in Central/southern Va seems like a reasonable choice. Any suggestions? A smaller ,more manageable version of Smith Mountain Lake would be ideal.

Is the meeting place to b e in some sort of rented house/large cottage, a hotel, or what?

I've always liked Charlottesville, VA. My late husband went to UVA there. Have not stayed there but the Boar's Head Inn is supposed to be really nice. Depends what kind of housing you are looking for I guess.

I think we would be open to hotel or rental house/cabins as long as weekend rentals are accepted. Smith Mountain Lake seems to be mostly week long rentals. Charlottsville is one of my favorite places, too. Thanks for the reminder!

Masanutten?

Claytor Lake. Much smaller. Haven't been there for a few years, but seems like it might fit the bill if you want a lake thing. There's not much to do around there city wise, but it is beautiful.

I'd forgotten Claytor Lake - we used to go there when I was at Va Tech, so so long ago. Thanks!

Mountain Lake also near Blacksburg or Wintergreen.

Lake Anna (maybe too far north?)

Occoneechee State Park in southern Virginia offers campsites, cabins and lodges in a lovely setting on Buggs Island Lake. I haven't been inside, but the lakefront lodges are new looking and very attractive. My mother, who lives nearby, kept telling me how nice the park is, but I didn't believe it before visiting last summer. In checking some 2014 summer weekend dates, I found that there are still options available. So 2015 should be doable. http://Www.dcr.Virginia.gov/state-pa...oneechee.Shtml

Lake Anna for sure. Beautiful lake. Whether you can get a rental in summer for only a weekend is another question. If so, I'd say do it. It does get a lot of boat traffic on summer weekends, but there are enough coves and inlets all over to avoid it for the most part. You can get a boat rental-speedboat or pontoon boat-for around 150-200/day.

Thank you everyone for some great ideas. I've run some of the locations by the Cousins, and they seem to be leaning towards Smith Mountain Lake. It looks like there are many different lodging choices around the lake so that everyone should be able to find something that suits them.
