Family in New York

Have visited NYC as a couple but this fall are taking our in-laws and 9 & 6 year old. Need advice on hotels. Stayed at the St. Regis before but don't want to take kids there or spend that kind of money. Would prefer a bit more central location (maybe lower east side or where?) Indoor pool would be great. Connecting rooms or suites. Any ideas under $200.00 I really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

The lower est side is not central. for that you would probably want the central park south area of midtwon easat or west.

Indoor pools are fairly rare in New York hotels. do you mean $200 per room or $200 for everyone. Be aware that many New York hotel room have only 1 large bed - so be sure whatever rooms you take have the be arrangement you desire.

I would recommend priceline - but I don;t believe it would allow you to search for the type accomodations you'll need - except as 3 double rooms.

Parker Meridian on W.57th St. - great location, rooms can be had for a not bad price, nice pool good restaurants - Norma's (best breakfast in town) Seppi's and the hamburger place downstairs.

I would suggest the Travel Inn on W 42nd St. My cousin, husband and 3 kids stayed there last summer and really enjoyed the hotel. It is around $100 a night and there is a nice pool. It is close to Times Square, but a 2 blocks west so it's quiter at night.

There is a deli there and free parking, so I think it's one of NY's best hotel deals.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your suggestions.

Sure it's a bargain and does have a pool and free parking, but be aware that the Travel Inn is several grades below the St. Regis. It's three very long blocks from Times Square and the area is very quiet at night. Personally, I don't think I'd stay in the area with young children and inlaws!

I'll second Le Parker Meridian. While it's not on the same level as the St. Regis, it is a great hotel and it has a pool.

Again, thank you for your replys. I'll check into La Parker Meridian. I should have said we'd like to keep it under $200 per room per night. I do need tips on locations as I have no sense of direction. I loved the ST. Regis but felt we were a bit too far away from things. Again, thanks.

The Doubletree Suites Times Square might be an option. Decent size suites with either a king or double beds and a pull out sofa bed in the living room. Check their internet booking rates, it might be in your price range.

The hotel is clean and surprisingly quiet with good security, you enter the ground floor entrance and must show your room key before going up to the 2nd floor lobby area. It is Times Square however, so it is a madhouse just outside the front door. Toy's R Us is just down the street for the kids, the subway stop is right on the corner and TKTS booth just across the avenue.

Thanks for your help. Does anyone know anything about the Marriot? I believe there is one in Times Square or near there.

Thanks.

I just had a bunch of visiters (some with children) staying in the Shelburne Murray Hill. I found great deals on their website, affinia.com, for studio and 1 bedroom suites. Both types of rooms had kitchen. The studio had 2 queen beds, the 1 bedroom had a king in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room. Everyone was very comfortable. Check the special offers section of the website for some good deals. Also check travelhero.com.

Yes the Marriott at Times Square is very popular but has no pool. A constant complaint there is long waits for the elevator (it's one of those internal glass jobs).

I wonder what "things" you felt were too far from the St Regis because Le Parker Meridien (a very good suggestion for your request) is quite near the St Regis and considered very centrally located.

If you're thinking of things like Soho, Chinatown, South Street Seaport etc., you might prefer to stay downtown. I can't remember whether any of the more affordable downtown hotels have pools.

The new Gansevoort Hotel in the very trendy meatpacking district(hotelgansevoort.com) has a pool but will be more $$$.

Post back with location "wish" (what do you want to be near?)

Again thanks for your help. I guess we wish to be near the touristy things. St. Regis was excellent but we felt a bit far away from everything. Maybe just perception because it was January and a cold snap! Anyone heard of Kimberely Suites? Giraffe? Michelangelo? We have 4 adults and 2 kids and it is Columbus Day weekend which I think may be a problem. Can anyone tell me the parade route? I'd hate to get trapped and unable to get to LGA on Monday morning so that will enter into where we stay.

THANK YOU.

The "touristy things" are all over NYC bonmark. Yes, I've heard of all the hotels you've just mentioned. There's someone else looking for family accomodation on the board and I happened to notice the Kimberley has a pool and is a suite hotel. Also near the Kimberley is the San Carlos, another all suite hotel. But again, these are in the east 50's--just a few blocks from the St Regis so you really need to explain what sights or locations you want to be near. The Michelangelo is a favorite on this board. It's in the Times Square area but not right in the thick of things. This might be a good location but no pool. The Giraffe gets rave reviews on tripadvisor.com and is in a fun area just south of midtown.

The Shelburne that MFNYC mentions is part of an all suite hotel/apt group called Affinia.com. The have up to 2 bedroom suites in certain locations and they all have kitchenettes.

The Colombus Day Parade goes up Fifth Ave. I believe it starts around 44-47th st and usually goes up to 86th st. So Fifth Ave. is closed to traffic making the other aves. very busy. Staying east of Fifth Ave. or south of 44th would theoretically solve the traffic problems to get to LGA.

The UN Millenium Hotel is another that has an indoor pool. It's not the most convenient location IMO for sightseeing, but it's good value for money, there are some awesome views and it would be easy to get in and out of the city since it sits almost on the east river.

The Parker Meridien is just a bit further west of the St. Regis. The Sheraton NY is on 51st/7th & they have a pool as well.

Thank you. It really helps to know the Parade route. I appreciate all the posts.
