Fall trip to Vermont and New Hampshire
Just beginning to plan a road trip from MI to Vt and NH...need to leave after 09/24...is that too late for color or just about right?..can spend a couple of weeks..any suggestions of must sees will be appreciated...I have tons of guide books etc..but like "personal" recommendations too...

9/24 is actually a bit early for color. It will be just barely starting. Early-mid October is better.
One area to consider is Franconia Notch, which is the northern part of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. We've stayed at Sunset Hill House which is nice, but there are lots of b&bs up there. Great hikes, both easy and difficult.
Also, definitely go up Mt Washington. 3 choices...hiking (if you are a GOOD hiker), driving (if you are a brave driver), or take the cog railway.

You can also go to the top of Mount Washington in a van (our preference).
The colors start in the northeast and move south and west, so you should plan your itinerary accordingly.
Reservations for overnight accomodations are essential and you'll want to do that forthwith.

We've stayed in Stowe VT (northern area) the third weekend in Sept and not seen any color but look for early reds in swamp maples. You should see some areas along the highways. Both states are great for wandering. Must sees depend on your likes. Most people like to spend at least a day at Shelburne Museum in VT. Canterbury Village in NH (near Concord) is another interesting historical site with guided tours. Vermont Country stores has two locations and is fun to visit esp to do some early Christmas shopping. You could hit some nice warm weather (Indian summer) and might enjoy a boat ride on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH or around Portsmouth NH. One of my favorite areas for driving around is between Lake W and the mountains in the Center Sandwich/Tamworth area. If you have any hobbies or special interests it would be great fun to follow up on them.
