Fall Follage
 

When and where to go to see fall follage in October. Thinking about the New Hampshire area. Also, need recommendations on accomodations. Thanks

I recommend North Woodstock, at one end of the Kancanagus Highway, which is spectacular. We stayed at the Wilderness B&B and enjoyed it.

If you do any googling to research on this topic you'll want to type in "foliage" (fo-lee-age). Not follage. You'll have much more success.

Pick the first full weekend in October which is Columbus Day weekend. Choose anyplace in central NH or VT ASAP because people book way ahead for accomodations. Get a really good map of the area so you can take alternate roads to avoid traffic congestion on the major highways. Try not to be on an interstate highway on Friday and Sunday afternoons. I would avoid the North Conway area on weekends and definitely wouldn't stay in that area. In you aren't looking for someplace romantic and/or scenic I would even suggest staying in Concord NH since it's a great location for heading in any direction. You could even do a day trip to Burlington VT (about 3 hours one way). Portsmouth NH with great restaurants and boat trips is only an hour away.

Columbus weekend is the busiest of a busy season in VT & NH. The weekend after is usually peak leaf-peeping season and sometimes you can get a better rate on lodging. With all the rain the Northeast has gotten this summer the foliage should be spectacular this fall. Have fun!

Thank you all for your response's. I was thinking of a B&B, but my husband is not fond of them. What would be a good alternative to a B&B, that would still be cozy? Lood forward to more posts. Thanks, Nancy

Once you get north of Manchster NH, nearly all of the state is quite scenic. Some places that stand out to me are Jackson, Bethlehem, Sunapee, Sugar Hill, Wolfeboro - there are dozens more. A few towns like Lincoln and North Conway, are fairly commercialized even though they are in beautiful areas.
