Fall Foliage in Vermont
 

Hi,

Any suggestions in Vermont which is within driving distance (3-4 hours) from NYC for mid October - 10/12 weekend? We have small kids and want to do some kids- related activities as well. If anybody has rented a house in past and had good experiences please share the details as well.

The drive from Bennington to Brattleboro over Hogback Mountain is always nice. I would stick to southern VT for that weekend. Color here in NH seems to be a little early. Brattleboro has a wonderful farmers market on Saturdays. If the weather is good, that would make a nice place for lunch (ethnic food vendors) and a place to stretch your legs. If you wanted to do a loop, I think Norwich is about an hour north via I91 and the Montshire Museum is a lot of fun for younger children. We took our GDs ages almost 6 and 8 there in the summer when the outdoor water play was a lot of fun. Indoors only is still a lot of fun and interesting. Lots of activities and a beautiful area.

We are finally headed to Castle Hill Resort and Spa in the Green Mountains of Ludlow, Vermont. Any suggestions for great activity in Fall season?

Ludlow is the home to Okemo ski area, which has an alpine slide. It should be open. Some other fun ideas would be the Mt. Ascutney auto road for spectacular views of both Vermont & New Hampshire - bring a picnic. Apple picking should still be going on, Wellwood Orchard north of Springfield Vt. is very scenic, and has a petting zoo, tractor rides, etc.

I just got back from the Brattleboro to Woodstock area, and foliage on VT 9 was already advanced on the mountain and toward Bennington. The Connecticut River Valley (i-91, US 5) was 25%, VT 106 about 35-40%, ditto VT 100 below US 4.

I think when you are there it will be just past peak but not gone unless they get a lot of wind.
