fall colors

Reaching Denver today and driving to Montrose. Tomorrow(6th) the plan is to see the foliage around dallas divide and million dollar highway and proceed to Aspen. Stay in Aspen for 2 nights to see Independence pass and Maroon bells. leave on 8th morning for Denver.
Any suggestions on the places where in we can see some good colors.

I live in CO at 8,500 feet and quite a few of the leaves have already fallen.

It's also a bit fresh this morning - 30F.

There's still some color out there, but it's fading fast. Best wishes for a wonderful visit, without or without leaves!

Check this thread also if you haven't seen it.

As of yesterday it seems the colors up in the high country of northern Colorado / RMNP are mostly gone. Yesterday's wind blow a lot of them off. Still may be some left in the mid-lower elevations, below 8000 feet or so.

Where you are headed there is often spectacular color in the cottonwoods along the Colorado River between Glenwood and Grand Junction. Not what most people are looking for in Colorado color, but it can be really beautiful for a couple weeks after the high country aspen have lost their leaves.

Good luck, you may still catch some aspen down where you are. Keep an eye on the weather the next few days. Have a great trip!

There is an up-to-date Colorado foliage thread on tripadvisor:

Also, in case the snow comes this week (friend in Aspen said they are due snow?) Check out the road condition for the pass to see if it is closed:

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the beautiful drive.

The aspen colors are peaking now in Winter Park. DH was there last weekend and our aspens were pure gold. I'm going up next weekend, and think I'll catch the tail end of the colors.

Your itinerary includes Aspen, one of our very favorite places. You will probably have peak or barely off-peak colors there in a few days. Lots of aspen trees there.

Drive safely on Independence Pass. Do not drive a wide car there.

Visit the Hotel Jerome for me. Great cocktails, bar, and fine dining restaurant in a cool, authentic Colorado atmosphere.

I have a funny story about Bill Murray and Hunter S Thompson together, at The Jerome's pool. They were discussing an upcoming film. I wonder if the Jerome even knows the story.

Why Montrose? Talk about authentic Colorado. Not usually on tourists' radar, though. Are you hunting?

DH worked there one summer, a long time ago, for the Division of Wildlife. He loved it.

Enjoy your visit. Even without peak color, fall is beautiful here.

Aspen/Snowmass received 4" of snow and more on the mountain overnight.
Winter is knocking on the door!

Reporting in from Winter Park. We arrived this afternoon. Colors are gone for the most part. We have some color in our yard, still, but not much.

That cold snap with snow did them in.
