Fall is New England's most picturesque time of year. When the foliage is ablaze, it's the perfect time for picture taking.

Hello, thanks everyone for the great suggestions on here. I got back from the trip, totally loved it! But too bad I missed the last two messages, as I was out.

Here's what I was able to do:

Day 1: Arrived late at MHT, very convenient small airport. Got shuttle to Highlander.

Day 2:

Got back to airport, got the rental car.
Visited Portsmouth, great downtown. Had lunch at Friendly Toast, suggestion by dfrostnh, great place.
Visited Nubble Lighthouse in Maine. Scenic drive the last 5 miles, the lighthouse area is amazing.
Had to miss the Wolfeboro area though, spent too much time at Nubble.
Checked out sunset on a lake at a College campus, taking a random turn at a side street.
Drove to Littleton, long drive.


Day 3:

Took White Mountain Trail, had two solid hikes.
Took Kanc trail, should have left more time for this, or should have started with this one, as this one seemed to have more color. Beautiful area, got no traffic, worked out great.
Drove to Stowe, long drive.

Day 4:

Took 100 to Waitsfield.
Stopped at a farm by the road selling all kinds of stuff.
Took the scenic road to Warren by turning left on Bridge street, as suggested by Zootsi. Very beautiful drive.
Drove further south on 100.
Drove to New London.

Day 5:

It was raining heavily in the morning, so did not make Lake Sunapee. Left for airport. The best colors by the roadside were from New London to Concord at the time of my trip.

If I were to do it again, the only thing I would change is to probably stay in one centrally located hotel instead of multiple reservations at different places. That way, I would not have to do multiple check-ins and check-outs which takes time, and also, that would keep my plan more flexible.

zatrams, thanks for reporting back, did you post your pictures anywhere? BTW, it is just getting pretty in southern New England, although it seems to be a little less brilliant this year, still nice though.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. We were here for early foliage, then left for a trip late afternoon of 9/29. The next day there was a big storm with heavy rain so I assume we lost quite a few leaves then. A friend who used to live in Vt and likes to visit for foliage season each year stayed at our house 10/6-10/8 while we were away. He gave the leaves a C- this year. Most of the color is over here now.
BTW we did see a few bright red sugar maples on our vacation: the US embassy in Sarajevo has planted some small trees out in front!

thanks for reporting back. There's so much to see that it's hard decided on where and when to go. Color looked poor along Rt 95 coming back from Providence RI yesterday - probably a lot of oaks. Color at home is great. It's probably peak in the Concord NH area. I agree, it's not an A year but I'd say more of a B.

WE just drove home from Maine, via the
white Mt. Valley. It was breathtaking.

maribethp, Where was breathtaking? I am planning to drive out of nyc this wednesday to look for colors. Everyone is saying this year is really spotty so please share the good spots. Thanks.
