This is probably stretching the bounds of a travel forum but I thought someone from the Williamsburg area could help me out. I just bought a home in Western NY built in the 1950's. It is supposedly modeled after a home in colonial Williamsburg (center entrance home with oak floors and wood pegs, wood doors with iron latches, chair molding, two symmetrical fireplaces, wood burning stove etc) and I would like to keep the decor of the house in style with that theme. So, what type of paint colors, wood species, furniture, fabrics etc would you find in a colonial Williamsburg home? Does anyone have a recommendation for a home furnishing store in Williamsburg that I could order things from?

I don't know what your price range is, but if it's not a tight budget, you can comission the craftsmen/artisans to make pieces for you. It's really amazing, since the table they make for you is made by hand over several days with the same tools that were used 300 years ago. This service isn't advertised very many places, if you're interested and can't find info online let me know and I can post the advert.

CW furniture can be very expensive, but I've found similar pieces and fabrics at Ethan Allen for less (esp. on a sale).

kmchick - I never thought about Ethan Allen. There is one right near my new house so I'll check it out (I probably can't afford a genuine CW commissed piece).

I recently purchased a sofa from Ethan Allen in Buffalo & boy was I disappointed. It is the most used & visible piece of furniture in our house & I could kick myself for buying it. I think they used to have good furniture but no longer. For $2800, I have a sofa where the cushions don't fit right & it makes a thunk when you sit down. I am waiting to see what they will do for me. Plus their service was terrible & it took much longer than expected. Next time, I will drive to Stickley in Rochester or look at the new Kittinger showroom.

P.S. I saw another of your postings - I have a 10mo old girl also!

I was disappointed in my Ethan Allen sofa and chair, purchased about 6 years ago. They were flawed form the start and have not held up well due to poor design.

I've been told that about the time I bought my stuff, EA was revamping themselves away from stodgy old classics and towards a more modern, less durbaility-oriented market.

I had no idea that EA furniture could be so shoddy! I have a bedroom set that I love from there, but I did notice the other day that the wood on the bed frame is already scratched from who knows what.

elizabethanne - I always forget to look into Rochester when shopping for home decor. I'm sick of all of the Raymour & Flanigan type stores around Buffalo! I'll be sure to check out Stickley - I looked at their website and there is a Williamsburg collection.

You mentioned paint colors. Martin Senour had a collection of Williamsburg paint colors. They were beautiful. I have used the Raleigh Tavern red, a gold shade and bisque. You might check. It seems that I saw a paint chart recently at a store that stocks Benjamin Moore paint.
