Fabric Shopping NYC Garment District
 

Hello, we in the beginning stages of planning our Spring NYC trip. Several members of our group want to shop for fabric & trims - do I take them to the Garment District? I was under the impression that many of the shops are to the trade only; can anyone make some specific recommendations on where we should shop? Thanks for your help!

Don't remember any store's name in particular. If I had't been with my husband, I cound have happily spent lots of time there.

ABC Carpet &amp; Home has a huge fabric selection (expensive, though)--but are you looking for home furnishing fabrics or clothing fabrics?

Grace:<BR><BR>There are several trim stores on 6th Ave that you might want to look at from 35th St up to about 39th mainly on the east side of the Ave. Lots of buttons, and trim and more.<BR><BR>Have fun while you are here.

Major fabric/trim shopping area includes the whole area around 39th and 40th between 7th and 8th; and along 8th from 36 to 40th. <BR><BR>And don't forget The Lower East Side, as well: The Orchard Street/Grand Street area is revitalizing itself, focused around the Tenement Museum, and has lots of fabric stores, boutiques, etc. And Lower Broadway, from south of Canal up to Houston.

What kind of help do you need? I've shopped these areas within the past year (i.e., the Garment District blocks outlined by Jen) and they don't change much.

If you want upholstery fabric, go downtown (Harry Zarin is huge). If you want clothing fabric, Mood at http://www.moodfabrics.com/contact-us/

when my kids were teens they loved MJ Trim for buckles, ribbons, - make your own belts, that type of thing - there used to be a bead store next to it but can't remember the name -

I like MJ Trim for tassels, fringe for pillows and comforters, etc - you can scope some of it out online but if you are looking for something particular they will hunt it up for you sometimes out back or upstairs

I want to start sewing again, on Long Island there had been a great store Fabric Mill that had desiners fabric at great prices (Malden Mills Polartec for about $6 a yard) but now they only have Upholstery fabric. Now I need an alternative!!!

mclaurie - thanks so much for the link! I'm headed to NYC tomorrow and was looking for a list of the fabric shops. Saw Mood on Project Runway so I had planned to stop there, but looks like I have a few more places to go!!
