fabric shopping in nyc
What is the one best option for a sewer (quilter) in midtown Manhattan.
|
a day or two in the garment district will keep you very busy from store to store with some of the highest and lowest quality fabrics known to mankind
|
More specifically go to 39th and 40th streets, between 7th and 8th avenues.
Lots of fabric stores |
We love cruising around in the Fashion District (formerly the Garment District), but it's so oriented towards clothing that a serious quilter, looking for quality cottons, might be disappointed. But it' still fun! Here's a map, click to enlarge, showing many of the places open for retail customers.

I guess I didn;t make it clear enough. I will be with non-sewers and will only be able to make one stop. Wouldn;t i love to have two or three days!!!

Must it be midtown? There's a place in SoHo that you'd love:

Are there any particular stores in the garment center that people here would recommend? I need to purchase about 50 yards of inexpensive gauze-type cotton..
Thanks! |

Mood Fabrics -- on 37th Street in the garmet district is a huge store with plenty of variety. It's the fabric store featured on Project Runway. Have fun!

Thanks..I will cruise around there one day soon and report back if I find any details of general interest. I am looking for light cotton that I can hang from some kind of wooden dowel to create a shady area on a terrace...
