Exploring Nine Mile Canyon
 

Planning another trip to see petroglyphs, ruins, etc in the southwest for next May and hope to visit Dinosaur NP and Nine Mile Canyon in UT. Has anyone gone through Nine mile canyon all the way? One of our books says the northern end is private and you need permission to go on it but the map shows it with "scenic dots" all along the route. If you do need permission, who do you contact to get it. Can you start from the north?

Check out the tourism website for that area--you could try Price, Utah or "Castle Country" etc. That should give you some more specifics. Or call the visitor's center in Price. That way you get what actually goes on vs. what the rules say. :-) (I am NOT advocating breaking rules or tromping our public lands, it's just that there is often a local understanding that it is ok to walk to X petroglyph but not to Y)

I haven't made it to Nine Mile Canyon yet myself, but I have friends at work who have. I'll check with them about the northern end of the road. It's pretty remote, but mining trucks do go barreling along rising clouds of dust. This is a subject of debate.

It would be my guess that the part of the road showing as "private" runs through Native American land. Lots of acres in northeastern UT belong to some of the first residents. If that's the case, then no permission would be needed. Just watch the speed limits.

Thanks, this will be our second try at it and last time it started to rain quite heavily and we only went in ten miles or so and didn't really explore the middle and upper parts at all.
