Exploring nature from Savannah, GA
 

We have several days to explore Savannah and environs at the end of March. We are particularly intereted in execursions to natural areas, for birding and walking trails or visiting coastal areas. Especially on the way to Charleston SC and back unless something wonderful in other directions. We are flying home from Savannah so need round trip advice.

One of the most stunning areas is the ACE Basin between Savannah and Charleston. Make sure you drive up to Charleston on Highway 17. Do not take Interstate 95.

I would suggest buying a book on the Low Country because there is too much to list.

Beaufort and the outlying areas are beautiful. Hunting Island is a wonderful state park.

It is such gorgeous breathtaking scenery it is hard to explain.

The Prince of Tides
The General (some John Travolta movie)

There are some more movies but I can't think of any more right now.

OliveOyl used to live in Savannah and is familiar with the area so she might have some imput.

Some time ago I remember driving just over the river from Savannah to a wildlife refuge or similar designated area where I stopped to walk and view birds and alligators. Men were there fishing as well.

An odd suggestion for "nature viewing" would be Bonaventure Cemetary. It is very beautiful with lots of vegetation and there's a lot of wildlife

I guess you may already be in Georgia, but I wanted to suggest that you try some sea kayaking as you travel the coast. My wife and I did it in Tybee Island near Savannah. The wildlife wasn't too spectacular in our particular locale but the mode of transportation was great. So wherever you choose to visit, check out kayaking as a peaceful way to visit some barrier islands that don't allow vehicles.

Also, the Travolta movie that GoTravel was thinking of is The General's Daughter. Have fun.
