Expedia.com - Question re booking hotel accomodation in New York
 

We are travelling to New York for 3 nights from Friday 6th February until Monday 9th February and are planning on booking hotel accomodation through expedia.com

We are flexible on what hotel we stay in but we are looking for an upscale hotel with a bit of luxury. From looking at expedia I see that there are hotels such as the Benjamin available at the moment for a rate of about $200 a night. My question is should we go ahead and book this now or should we wait until about a week before we travel and make a booking at a better price then? Are prices likely to fall much lower or might we end up having a problem with room availability?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

You may want to consided going Priceline for a 4-5* property, in midtown west location?? Have you also looked at priceing direct from their web site?? Early Feb is "low season" but there is no way to predict if prices will drop??? I wouldn't book with Expedia and book where you have a cancelation option and keep track of pricing trends, but still have a back up.

Agree with the Queen. Bid on Priceline for a much better price than that.v~~~~

Wavy, I'm not sure I agree with the advice you've gotten about Priceline. While it's true you can pay perhaps half of $200/night (and by the way, there's a stiff hotel tax of about 18% and may be on top of that), the 4 star hotels in midtown west on Priceline are not all what I would consider "a bit of luxury". Go to biddingfortravel.com and look at the list of Priceline hotels in each area. Also have a look at recent winning bids. While I haven't seen any Feb dates, it appears the Hilton is what most peopel are getting for a 4 star hotel in MTW. I would suggest trying Upper Midtown-Central Park South area. I think all the 4 stars in that area are very good. Also, if you don't mind being all the way uptown across from the Met Museum, people are winning the Stanhope (Park Hyatt) for about $118. This would be UES 4 star. The 4 stars in MTE (midtown east) are mostly fine but the rooms at the W are VERY small.

Mclaurie - thanks for the great tips - I am not from the USA and I havent used priceline before so the advice is much appreciated. If the locals in New York prove to be as helpful as you we will have a wonderful time!

IMO... The Benjamin is one of the best hotels in NYC. 200.00 is a bargain if it is a suite. I have never stayed in one of the "rooms" so if it is a room I would call and check the square footage. The suites are awesome, huge and virtually sound proof. No outside noise penetrates the windows. Luxury amenities throughout. It's just a great hotel, everytime, all the time. Check reviews on tripadvisor.com and travelocity.com
