exchange rate

Where is the best place to exchange the dollar for the euro? Here at home or in Italy?

I like to hit an ATM at the airport as soon as I arrive in another country. I find I usually get the best exchange rate that way. I should mention that my bank does not charge an "out of network" fee, which is something you need to consider.

Try to charge as much as you can as it is the best rate of exchange. I also get $ from the atm at the airport. I try to take $ out only once, as there are service charges.

There have been many threads on this topic on the Europe forum. Type in ATM in the search box.

Bottom line, if you want the best rates, use your ATM card in Italy. If you get some Euro at the airport before you depart, you will be charged considerable fees, plus a lousy exchange rate.

When you get to Italy and you exchange $$$ for Euro, you will also get a bad exchange rate.

Use the ATM card. Most take the money out of your checking account. ((b))

Topping, waiting for someone to chime in with "I always like to have some Euro with me when I land so I always get $50 to $100 worth at the airport."

If that makes you feel warm & fuzzy, then do it, but you will have to pay extra for that warm & fuzzy feeling. ((a))

If you are inquiring about changing "green backs" into Euros, you would probably get the best rate at a bank in Italy.

If you want the best exchange rate, the ATM card in Italy will give you that. ((b))
