Excellent trip to Charleston and kiawah
Stayed for two nights in Charleston at the Planters Inn.
For food: Peninsula grill for dinner (fab and must have the coconut cake), hominy grill for breakfast (quite possibly the best breakfast I've ever had); cru cafe for lunch (excellent brisket sandwich with Mac n cheese side); snob for dinner (bartender was super but o/w overrated, wouldn't ever go back--over salted & over handled crab cake, flavorless beet/veggie salad), and last but def not least another great breakfast at Dixie supply co. What I did: A palmetto carriage ride (luckily drew the rainbow row/battery loop), toured the old slave mart, magnolia plantation (slave cabins tour), drayton hall, walked and walked and shopped along broad, king and east bay streets, took in spoleto Bullet Catch show, and shopped in the rainbow market (which has its own unique charm). I'd do it exactly the same with these Ashley river houses if I had to do it over. Then to sanctuary @ Kiawah for two nights. Where I did little exc get a massage, read and bike ride on the beach. Ate at the Atlantic room and jasmines porch. Happy with both, but avoid the beef at the latter, stick with the real lowcountry cuisine. Service at both hotels was fantastic, gracious, warm and attentive and not stuffy or snobby, which is key for me. I'm now a grits fan, never would've thought it could happen. But I need some time before I eat so many biscuits again. SC, Ill be back! |
Sounds like a fabulous trip! Will make notes for our trip in Sept. Thanks~

And we have another grits convert. Good deal.
I've been to those restaurants on Kiawah, and while they are fine, it's hard to justify eating there when there are so many stunning restaurants in Charleston. The Fat Hen on Maybank is excellent. I've been to SNOB many times, and some have been better than others. Their lunch specials are usually great and a good deal. So glad you had fun. |
Thanks this report! I also thought Hominy Grill was fantastic! I'd like to go back to Charleston one day too!
