NYC metro card expiration date

Friends were in NYC last week and upon returning home gave me 2 metro cards with about $10 left on each. I'll be in NYC in Oct. 2013. The expiration date on the back of the cards is 2014-- do the cards expire before that? I'm not sure what type card they purchased.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Value on a Metrocard doesn't expire for a year. Unlimited cards expire after the time period (1 week or 1 month), but an unused, unactivated card wouldn't expire for a year, either.

You'll be fine.

And FTR, if the expiration date is getting close, you can turn it in for a new card - if you can find a "token clerk" in a booth.

I have taken cards that were expired by a few weeks to a token booth and the clerk transferred the balance to a new card.
