Excape from Houston Texas heat
 

Just curious, with the high summer
temperatures and humity in Houston
where do you go to escape the heat?

Second homes on the coast, mountain
areas, lakes or nearby cities much
cooler?

Mike, when I lived in Houston (til I was 30) there was no escaping the heat to nearby cities, because none of them were any cooler. Austin was a bit dryer, less humidity, but not cooler by any stretch. Galveston was actually a good get away. I would rent houses there on the beach in all seasons, whenever I could get away for a week. I esp. liked it in winter and spring, obviously not for the sea (it is not great ocean anyway) but at least it was the beach.

EVERYWHERE in Texas is air conditioned! Some places are even too COLD in the summertime, so you have to bring a sweater.

I live in Dallas, and I've learned to stay inside during the heat of the day (from 2 PM to 6 PM) and do all of my outside activities in the cooler mornings or evenings. Unfortunately, there are no mountains close to Houston, and the lakes are no cooler than in town. So, we just enjoy our air conditioned homes, or go catch a movie in the air-conditioned theatre!

We stay INSIDE! ;) Seriously it can become sweltering, so most people tend to do any outdoor activities early in the morning or late in the evening. I've only lived here 3 years and you get used to it after a while.

I actually escaped the heat by selling my house and moving back to Minnesota. We had a heat wave today. 81 and breezy. What was I thinking those years in Texas? I'll take a nice Minnesota blizzard any day over a humid 105 in Texas.

First I vacationed in mountains and high latitudes, then I moved to the mountains (7500 feet) seven years ago.

I just go to work - the buidling is cold enough that without a sweater I am freezing :)

I should note that while i lived in Houston it was easy to get to Mexico (and cheap- you can drive to the border, park your car in Laredo in a garage, and hop on the overnight train to Mexico City, and then go anywhere from there). And there are mountains in Mexico, and great coastline on both sides, It's the best cheap getaway from Houston, if you have the time. And if you have some bucks and can fly, all the better.
