"<i>I hope AA did not change your international flight to Newark.</i>"
that's just being mean :P |
I'm not a New Yorker, but I have driven in many times and have no idea how to get into the city from EWR without going thru a tunnel. And on a Sat. nite I'm thinking there are usually a bunch of tunnel people coming into the city for a night out. I usually have close to an hour bumper to bumper wait on as good day. Can you just go around Manhattan somewhere? Thanks in advance.

There are two ways to avoid Manhattan. From New Jersey to get to Brooklyn and then to JFK, you take the Goethels Bridge to the Staten Island Expressway to the Belt Parlway which will take you to JFK.
The other way to get from NJ to NY without going through Manhattan traffic is to go much farther north and take the George Washington Bridge. You will be in Manhattan but on roadways and miles from midtown traffic and from there you can go into the Bronx and then Queens. This is not recommended if you want from EWR to JFK or even LGA. |
By the way, the connection between the SI Expressway and the Belt is that big bridge I forgot to mention the Verrazano.

Or you can do what we did one Saturday last month driving past EWR on our way from PA to JFK. We took the tunnel to cut through NYC, stopped at Laduree for macarons, continued out the other side and got to JFK no problem. ;)
