Everglades in the summer?
 

We're thinking about a weekend trip to the Everglades this summer. We live just south of Tampa, so the heat/humidity we can accept, but what about misquitoes? Will they be unbearable? Normally I would go in the winter or spring, but our two older boys aren't home at the same time until June.

Plan on taking gallons of deet with you.

Yes, they are that bad. June is height of the mosquito season.

I guess one of the older boys wonn't get to go! Either that or we wait until next Christmas.....Thanks.

For the most part you will have the park all to yourselves anytime you visit during the summer. When we lived in S. Florida we would go the Everglades several times during the summer. The skeeters are not as bad near the v-center but once you get closer to Flamingo and the brackish water they can get really bad. The best time to go is in winter just after a cold front has passed thru. We would time our trips this way. When we went in the summer we would seldom get out of the van.

closer to flamingo, bad news, well, to modify, if you get into more enclosed areas of trees they will envelop you. you would not be able to go without a head net.

We tried to take the hiking trail that starts in the bottom of the last camping loop in Flamingo, if memory serves me it may have been the Coastal Prairie Trail. Boy were the skeeters horrendous. We even had nets, gloves and repellent. They would get to you thru your clothing. We did not make it far that day. This was in late March.

i do not recall the trail, but i got in a couple of hundred yards with 100% deet, (melted fingernail polish...) and decided there had to be a better way to spend my time in the everglades!

I think of March as a dry month and therefore bearable, but obviously not. What about December?
