Everglades City, FL
Two old frts are looking for a place to watch a couple of tranquil sunsets for a week or so. I've heard that Everglades City is a bit laid back and easier on the pocketbook. Is it worth the trip to spend some time mid January. 2007? Any place special to look for lodging and meals?

Unless you are avid outdoorspeople, I would suggest Hollywood Beach Florida instead.
|
There are sunsets from Hollywood Beach? Not over the water surely! Maybe sunrises though.
It's true there isn't much to do in Everglades City -- it is VERY laid back. The Rod and Gun Club is very old world -- you'd think Ernest Hemingway is in the room down the hall. |
Facing the Intracoastal Waterway the sunsets are great!

I would pick somewhere in the middle or lower keys instead of Everglades City. The Rod & Gun Club is a neat building but the upstairs was inaccessible when we were there. We stayed in a motel room like cabin on the grounds. Unless you plan to fish everyday, I don't see the attraction - -certainly not for a week! Look at something like Parmer's Place http://www.parmersresort.com/ in the lower Keys.

Oh, my! What would you do there for a week? I only spent a day there and couldn't believe people actually live there year round. Alligators everywhere....Yikes!
I'm glad I visited, as it was so unlike home....but I personally think you could find a cheap place on the beach somewhere to enjoy Florida and the sunsets. It's a big state. Just my 2 cents. HAVE FUN! |
Everglades City is like stepping back in time to old Florida. Laid back would be an understatement -- I don't think there's anything to do (except for the jet airboat tours through the Everglades). There's a tiny museum in town that is actually very interesting regarding the history of the area. I think the "city" was built to give workers a community to live in as the route connecting Tampa and Miami was being built through the Everglade (Tamiami Hwy - Rt 40 or 41?)
But if you're looking for VERY laidback with not much else going on, you just might enjoy your time there. |
