Ever been to St. Jo Mo.

Has anyone ever been to St. Joseph, Missouri?

My husband and I are going there near the end of July for a wedding. We were thinking of making a weekend of it.

We could go either way, nice B&B or cheapola Ma and Pop motel. We plan on seeing the museums (Jesse James etc.) and maybe a little antique browsing.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks all

My in-laws live in St. Joe, MO. I suggest going to Barbosas for Mexican food. Kansas City is about an hour from St. Joe and has a lot more to offer.

I should've mentioned, my husbands parents are from Kansas City, so we're not really interested in going farther south (we're coming in from Iowa).

Neither one of us have ever been to St. Joseph though.
Being from Iowa, you might find St. Joe has quite a bit in common with Waterloo. Not a very remarkable town, not really close to anything exciting. You could drive across the river to Atchison, KS to the Earhart museum.

St. Joe has plenty of fast food and dingy bars with seedy customers. That's about it. Sorry.

I went to St. Joe in March with my kids. We went to the Pony Express Museum (rather small, but interesting, nonetheless). Drove by the Jesse James house (where he was killed). The downtown looked like it has been updated to attract tourists to its many antique shops. It was clean. There is a Pony Express statue in the square. (The Museum is not near the statue..) There is a river front Park that we never made it to. It was COLD and windy the day we went so we didnt' want to get out of the car very often as I have an 8 month old. I believe there is a Holiday Inn there. There is a nice mall there...with a few eating establishments nearby (Cracker Barrel for one...tee hee). I'm sure there are B&B's, just not familiar with them.

We drove up from KC..it was about a 90 minute drive for us.

I wouldn't count on being busy every single minute of the day you are there...one or two excursions is what you can expect per day. It is a pretty scenic town. Home of Walter Cronkite!

Stayed overnight there during a cross country bicycle trip. Went to an art museum in a house worthy of a "look-see" itself alone, believe it was the "Albrych Museum" or "Albrych Gallery" ... there were two different Pony Express related museums. Didn't have time for Earhart Museum in Atch., but Topeka had some interesting museums & zoo.

I travel through St Jo at least 4 or 5 times a year and never have I stopped to site-see. (Omaha to KC via 1-29)

However, I did find a website that lists out "attractions". You might want to check it out. It does list many of the sites that people have already posted about.

http://www.ci.st-joseph.mo.us/historic.html

HTH!

S

Thanks for all your suggestions.

That's funny about Waterloo. I'll be there (actually Cedar Falls, but they're connected) for two weeks proceeding the wedding. Is the downtown like Waterloo's?

Would the Earhart museum be worth it?

I think we will go to the Pony Express Museum and the Albrych Museum?

Wandering around downtown will depend on the weather. Its been pretty miserable already up here.
