Evening sweater or jacket in Maui?
 

We will be going to Maui in a couple of weeks (June 11-19). Wondering what to pack. Will I need a lightweight jacket or sweater for evenings? Do they get chilly there? No one seems to talk about what kind of clothing to pack. Also, will I need a sweater for early morning walks along the beach? Thanks, Deb

We were in Maui last year for 10 days in July. I don't think I even put a sweater on the whole time. With that said I don't recommend not taking at least a sweater, however. Our condo was right on the beach and we would sit out on the lanai until well past 11:00 pm and never once got chilly. Same with the mornings. We were in the water by 9:00am!(and I am one who is always cold). If you are planning on driving up to Haleakala State Park. (highly recommended) you will need something warm for the top. You will make a 10,000 ft climb and depending on the time of day, you will need something warmer. Dress is very casual. We found that even in most restaurants, appropriate shorts were acceptable.
Even though you didn't ask, may I suggest my favorite places? Mama's Fish House (pricey, but worth it); The road to Hana (a must do); Old Lahaina Luau (great ambiance); Ulalena (a musical of the Islands' beginnings); and snorkel until you turn into a prune! Have a great trip!!!

Any time you have differing temperatures between land and sea, the wind will blow. Walking along the beach in the early morning qualifies. Take a sweater.

Mornings will be warm--once the sun comes up you'll feel it. We're at 21° north. But, as a rule, we cool down by 20 or so degrees at nights, more upcountry or by the ocean. I often use a wrap at night, especially if there are good winds blowing. I rarelt use a jacket or sweater, but a nice light wrap, like a pashmina will do you. Or you can wait unti you get to Maui and buy a nice pareo to use as a swimsuit cover by day, light wrap by night.

We were in Maui last week and I didn't need a sweater, and I usually am always cold. The mornings were HOT. I had one of the most uncomfortable runs in my life at 7am in the morning. It was warm, and the humidity was high. Not great running weather!

I would secnd the suggestion that you bring something, and I also highly recommend Mamas Fish House. I don't care for seafood, and I cleaned my plate!

For any tropical desination- i plan for that extra layer and wear it on the plane ride over. A very lightweight silk knit black cardigan works well for me ('dressy' enough over a sundress for evenings). You'll definitely want it on the plane, then you'll have it if you need it for other circumstances.

Deb, here's what i pack for hawaii:

2-3 bathing suits
2-3 sarongs
7-10 assorted warm weather tops
3 shorts
3 capri
2 sandals
1 flip flops
1 sneakers
1 something to sleep in or silk robe
1-2 skirt or sundress (optional)
hat (or buy one there)
beach towel (or buy one there)
sunglasses
black knit jacket or cardigan
socks, bras, underwear

this list includes what i wear on the plane, so subtract the sneakers, and one pants, top, jacket from the list that is on ME & not in the suitcase!

You probably won't need anything warmer than a very light-weight cover-up. We were never cold in January on Maui except at Haleakala, where we were freezing in our winter coats. Seriously! We brought winter coats just for Haleakala and were still cold!

Deblyn, I should add that when we brought our "winter" coats for Haleakala, they were coats designed for San Diego winters...NOT for snowy climates! The late afternoon/early evening chill winds up at Haleakala blew right through our coats. I hear it's just as cold in the morning for sunrise.

Deblynn, I think a neutral, light pareo, that you could use with swimsuits or sundresses, would be perfect. In all my times in Hawaii, I've never used an evening wrap or sweater, except for one exceptionally chilly evening on Kauai in February once. But Haleakala before sunrise...... that's another kettle of fish. For that, we used sweatshirts and hotel blankets! :-)

I've been to all the islands and I've NEVER taken a jacket or sweater, or anything long sleeve for that matter! It's so hot and humid there, I don't need it. But it ALL BOILS DOWN TO if you're a "hot" person or a "cold" person. Do you get cold easily? Of course, as you can tell, some people are "cold" people and have recommended some type of light jacket or sweater. I've NEVER needed that. But I'm a "hot" person. Even at night, I've never felt that it's cold enough that you would need a jacket or sweater.

It's not night it's the top of Haleakala that I would suggest bringing something warmer. I had on most every piece of clothing in my suitcase for that excursion.

nez, you're very welcome. i'm happy to help. that list is a "pack" i've perfected after many trips to Mexico and Hawaii. it's not just for Maui but works well for any (reasonably lazy i.e., no hiking boots needed) tropical vacation.

I agree- a very light wrap/cardigan for evenings is all you'll need.

Thanks for all your advice! I will probably take a very lightweight wrap/cardigan with me, (I am a cold person). We will probably not be doing Haleakala, as I have trouble with altitude sickness anyway. Besides, we are going to Maui for the ocean & beaches, not the mountains, we have those right @ home!!
