Essex House ? Mark??

Several years ago we stayed at the Essex House. We are making a return trip to NY and am wondering if it would be a good choice among its peers. I enjoyed the location, but am not tied to the hotel. i.e. is it showing its age? or aging well?

What about the Mark? I could get a larger room for a better price. I tend to be a night owl, so a separate bedroom would be a bonus so I do not disturb my spouse while I watch Letterman/Leno.

The trip is early Aug, for about a week, two adults. Will be seeing shows and a museum or two. Any tips would be appreciated.

Love the Mark! The Plaza Athenee, The Carlyle and The Pierre are also right in that same area and are also equally swanky. The Pierre and Plaza Athenee are actually on Fifth Avenue across the street from Central Park as is The Essex House.

We last stayed at the Essex House 6 years ago and were married from there. It was lovely and we would love to go back. I noticed that it has a new prefix to its name, if that means anything...

Thanks for the comments!
I also noticed the new prefix and was wondering if there was any change that would materialize because of it. Any comments on that???

It will be interesting to see any current responses to this post.
Jumeriah owns some of the finest hotels in the world... check out the thepalm.ae or http://www.burj-al-arab.com/
They will undoubtedly do something spectacular with the Essex... I am just not sure how far along they are.
Anyone?

We love the Mark. I've heard that they're closing to be converted to condos, so it could be your last chance to stay there.

GoTravel, the Plaza Athenee, which is also great, is on 64th near Madison.

You can't go wrong with your choices, but we prefer the Mark's location. The neighborhood is more quiet further uptown.

The Surrey is an all suite hotel not far from the Mark (owned by Affinia) if you're looking for a 1 bedroom suite, but I agree, this may be your last chance to stay at the Mark.

If you want to stay closer to the theater district, the Blakely has 1 bedroom suites and is in an ideal spot within walking of the theaters but not right in the theater district.

There have been lots of complaints on tripadvisor lately about the rooms at the Essex House, particularly running/broken toilets.
