Erie Canal - Finger Lakes Region - Day Trip?

We're heading to the Finger Lakes on Saturday May 4 2013 and will be staying through May 16. We're staying in Ithaca, Letchworth State Park, and Canandaigua. Is it possible to do a day trip to one of the sections of the Erie Canal around in the region? We'd like to walk along a section or take a boat tour (not operate the boat ourselves). It would be interesting to see some of the locks also. We're not bringing bikes, but would be open to renting them if there's a good spot. We're not great riders anymore but a nice flat section would be great. I poked around on the Forum and didn't see much on this topic (more about renting a barge you operate yourself).

Thanks for any tips.

The Colonial Belle Tours run from Fairport, NY (near Rochester)... they start in Mid May so you will need to contact them for start dates for this season...

the phone # is 585-223-9470 and the web site is www.colonialbelle.com

In case anyone wonders, we did find the Erie Canal around Palmyra and walked along the canal on a nice towpath...just what we wanted. We went from our B&B in Canandaigua. Really nice experience; saw some of the locks as well.

We also found the Erie Canal a few years back just as a huge cargo ship came thru the locks! Thanks for the report back!
