Equinox - Manchester, VT
 

Hi. We will be heading to the Equinox resort for a few nights in mid July and looking for recommendations for things to do. We are in our 60's and love to hike, walk, enjoy local fresh food and craft beer.

Would appreciate recommendations for a hike or two (easy to moderate).

Local restaurants. Not fancy dining; a place with outstanding fresh and local food and atmosphere.

Canoe rental possibly. I did some searching and thought it may be best for someone who has actually done part of the river to provide some specifics. I think a 4 hour trip would be nice.

A place for a long walk. We typically take a 4-5 mile walk everyday. Maybe there is a place you would recommend that offers beautiful scenery. Fine if the hiking takes care of this.

We will not take advantage of some of the things the Equinox offers like fly fishing, driving cars, or golf. Possibly the clay shooting but that seemed pretty expensive and timely.

Anything else would be appreciated as well.

Do you know if we should be concerned with the effects of the recent floods? We are supposed to head out on this coming Sunday.

You should really check with the Vermont state government website or the resort itself. As of today there are many towns in VT with no functional road access in and out as so many roads were washed away or were severely damaged.

Reports from Manchester say it is ok but nearby mountain towns are not so lucky.
What to do in and around Manchester?When this horrible weather ends, you can drive up to the top of Equinox Mountain for beautiful views. Visit the historic Equinox Hotel. During the winter, ski at nearby Bromley and Stratton Mountains. In the summer fly fish in the Battenkill, drive up into the beautiful mountains. Visit the ski areas for lunch, great views.

I live in VT and stories I have seen indicate there was less damage in the Manchester area than in other parts of the state.

I do think rescheduling your trip until later in the summer when recovery work is done makes sense.

When/if you go to Manchester, I recommend visiting Hildene, Robert Todd Lincoln's summer home. It has 12 acres of walking trails that might be good for the kind of walks you are interested in.

I was reminded of this thread yesterday when my husband and I drove through Manchester on our way home from a trip farther south. The area was quite busy and there was no sign of flood damage.
I think a lot of people were probably hoping to see foliage, and nothing much has changed in that area yet. The color is much better, although not peak, where we live in north central VT

Since this thread has popped up again I thought I would clarify that the two recent severe flooding events in VT last month did not affect the Manchester area.

My husband and I are going to see an art exhibit at the Manchester Community Library next week
